towo`: for closed source too? (Thanks)
xsub0 2017-03-04 07:50:53

La09x09 2017-03-04 07:52:18
I cant find caffeine-gtk package
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:52:33
so in mate, I cant make "caffeine" package show up in panel
missmbob 2017-03-04 07:53:17
La09x09: it's just caffeine
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:53:37
missmbob, but I want to turn it on and off through notification panel
missmbob 2017-03-04 07:53:40
oh for gnome you need gnome-shell-extension-caffeine
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:53:46
I use mate
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:53:48
not gnome
missmbob 2017-03-04 07:53:53
then that's it. run it
jhutchins 2017-03-04 07:54:06
Interesting. It appears that if your kernel is from wheezy backports, it will upgrade to jessie backports.
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:54:07
it doesnt show up in menu (panel)
missmbob 2017-03-04 07:54:21
La09x09: alt+f2
n___ 2017-03-04 07:54:39
i'm building linux-ppc32/64 kernels, and trying to cut out all unnecessary drivers.. is there a tool that will assess a generic system, the modules in it, compare that to whats loaded, and look at the dmesg to see what hw is available.. then kick out a .config file with drivers for hw that actually exists?
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:54:50
missmbob, I know but how can I see that in panel? to know the current status of caffeine
missmbob 2017-03-04 07:54:56
La09x09: might have to run caffeine-indicator
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:55:16
missmbob, great!. worked. thanks
n___ 2017-03-04 07:55:18
silver lining: i found out I can upgrade the processor in my G4 to a 7448 with a higher clockspeed
n___ 2017-03-04 07:55:22
lol
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:55:27
missmbob, so caffeine is necessary for netflix right?
jhutchins 2017-03-04 07:55:34
n___: Boot the system, lsmod > modules.needed
La09x09 2017-03-04 07:55:39
In arch, I didnt need caffeine. strange.
missmbob 2017-03-04 07:55:48
La09x09: i wouldnt know
n___ 2017-03-04 07:56:23
jhutchins: yeah, I'm more of a bsd kernel programmer.. I have done a ton with linux, but the basic commands (like lsmod over modstat or kldinfo are confusing)
n___ 2017-03-04 07:56:42
as are the kernel symbol_names_formatted_this_way compared to symname
n___ 2017-03-04 07:56:44
;)
n___ 2017-03-04 07:56:55
jhutchins thx though
n___ 2017-03-04 07:59:13
jhutchins -- lsmod piped to modules.needed is all good but i guess i am looking for a utility to translate that into .config syntax
n___ 2017-03-04 07:59:26
so I can just throw it in /usr/src/linux and make -j33
n___ 2017-03-04 07:59:55
That would be a useful utility I think, to create a starting point for .config if nothing else than to give one the necessary (and only the necessary) drivers
La09x09 2017-03-04 08:00:02
missmbob, and for sound, I can put it max through settings. then it goes back to default (lower than maximum)
n___ 2017-03-04 08:00:08
other features could be then added with make config/menuconfig/etc.
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:01:13
La09x09: have you installed/run pavucontrol?
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:01:35
n___: I think I'd do it manually. At least take a look at how long the list is.
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:02:24
n___: With Linux' modular architecture, the kernel itself is a pretty standard size, and you only load the modules you need, so the only thing you save by not building unneeded modules is disk space.
La09x09 2017-03-04 08:02:29
missmbob, yes I have it installed.
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:02:45
La09x09: is that what you're using? i dont know if mate uses it
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:03:04
n___: There's not much to be gained by building everything into the kernel, and the initrd should only have required modules in it.
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:03:32
Looks like going multiarch is finally cleaning up the old kde install I had.
La09x09 2017-03-04 08:03:45
missmbob, when I put the volume to maximum and then press volume keys on laptop, it goes back to medium(default) volume
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:04:18
La09x09: sounds like alsa but i'm not sure how to help you with that. hopefully someone else will
ewew 2017-03-04 08:18:07
Hi. Is someone here who has experience with ddrescue ?
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:24:58
ewew: yes. Please state your question so we can help you.
ewew 2017-03-04 08:25:16
rescued: 127242 MB, errsize: 1351 MB, current rate: 5120 B/s ago[[B^[[ ipos: 228927 MB, errors: 31025, average rate: 214 kB/s[[B^[[B^[[ opos: 228927 MB, run time: 6.86 d, successful read: 0 s ago
ewew 2017-03-04 08:25:47
on fs its about 229 GB big. why is there a big difference.
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:26:40
You mean the difference between rescued and the actual size?
ewew 2017-03-04 08:26:45
yes
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:28:05
Hmm, I don't have that much experience with dd_rescue, but it might be that it could not read the other sectors
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:28:18
there are 31025 errors
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:28:37
ewew: isn't it still running?
ewew 2017-03-04 08:28:44
yes.
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:29:14
so, it states the currently rescued size, and will work until it has finished copying all the sectors it can
ewew 2017-03-04 08:30:02
is there a chance of overruning of total size of rescued partition ?
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:30:50
Hey, any idea why df shows that there are 0B available? https://paste.debian.net/plain/918048
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:31:20
If I substract "used" from "1K-blocks" I get a remaining size of about 500MiB
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:31:43
I'm also able to create new files so the filesystem can't really be full
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:32:35
bauerj: It is probably rounded up
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:33:36
Does "available" usually show a different unit than "used"?
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:33:59
bauerj: I don't know
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:34:38
bauerj: You are really running on the very limits of the file system though. Many people recommend filling up partitions to no more than 70%
axujen 2017-03-04 08:34:43
hello
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:34:49
Okay, I think it's unlikely that it would round 400M to 0 though^^
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:34:52
Yes, you're right
axujen 2017-03-04 08:35:17
anyone with experience with the intel gma 500 gpu? im looking to install the proprietary driver or anything that can give decent video playback
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:35:47
bauerj: which os?
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:35:56
bauerj: might depend on the fs-type as well.
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:35:59
Debian GNU/Linux 8
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:36:08
It's ext4 on LVM
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:36:10
i meant fs
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:36:13
ok^^
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:36:20
ext4 reserves 5% for root by default
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:36:43
Well, that would make sense
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:37:02
missmbob: Oh, so the space that ext4 does reserve doesnt end up in "Used"?
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:37:40
But I'm also able to use space as a non-root user
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:37:47
not if there are none used, i'm pretty sure not
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:38:35
eh, i dont see that. on same install?
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:38:45
bauerj: Might be interesting to do df -h
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:38:51
su -sh /*
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:39:00
du -sh /* sorry
ewew 2017-03-04 08:39:04
Hestben Could it be that zeros are not counted ?
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:39:46
ewew: In currently rescued space? I think zeroes are counted, if it is part of the data.
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:39:55
Okay, missmbob was right
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:40:02
tune2fs -m 0 /dev/dm-0 and now it shows it correctly
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:40:12
axujen: Most intel chipsets are supported by open source drivers. lspci -nn and post the PCIID.
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:40:20
Thanks!
missmbob 2017-03-04 08:40:50
great
axujen 2017-03-04 08:41:58
jhutchins, not this card no, its one card that doesnt have good open source drivers :/
jhutchins 2017-03-04 08:42:05
brb
ewew 2017-03-04 08:42:26
Hestben the problem is if i attempt to get some data, the tool report for example 213 GB image
axujen 2017-03-04 08:42:33
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation System Controller Hub (SCH Poulsbo) Graphics Controller [8086:8108] (rev 07)
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:42:36
bauerj: Be adviced that ext4 may not have any space left to rescue files if the computer suddenly loses power in that filled up state the fs is in.
bauerj 2017-03-04 08:43:23
Okay, I'll try to slim down the system somehow to get a bit of space back
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:43:59
ewew: You mean, the partition you are rescuing is not really filled completely, and you want it to only copy the data that is used? I'm not sure, but it may be that dd_rescue will copy the partition bit by bit as it is.
ewew 2017-03-04 08:44:29
im wondering if something did not get corrupted.
Hestben 2017-03-04 08:44:31
ewew: It may not care anything about what fs is on the partition, and thus does not know and care about how filled it is.
