j4ckcom: out of curiosity, what search engine gave no results? bing and duckduckgo also gave the answer as the first hit
j4ckcom 2017-03-05 15:46:38
googlo.com
j4ckcom 2017-03-05 15:46:46
there is no result

googlo.com is not a search engine. google.com does give a result. I'm not sure why you dont see it. xz is a compression format/program
j4ckcom 2017-03-05 15:48:45
ok then how can uncompress it?
j4ckcom 2017-03-05 15:48:47

camh 2017-03-05 15:49:43
apt-cache search xz
honaalz 2017-03-05 15:50:20
hi, i've a question but not really debian related, are any software/apps/packages with a version number starting with a "0", like "0.11.2", considered as beta?
camh 2017-03-05 15:50:52
honaalz: version numbers are pretty much meaningless, except that they go up
th_ 2017-03-05 15:52:03
only if the developer says its beta :D
honaalz 2017-03-05 15:52:19
true but isnt there is some sort of convention? like 1.0, 2.0... for big release, 1.1 for updates, 1.0.1 for bugfixes?
camh 2017-03-05 15:52:41
some people think there's a convention. those who don't do not follow it
camh 2017-03-05 15:53:12
e.g. the linux kernel gets a new "major" version number when the "minor" one starts getting too big
honaalz 2017-03-05 15:54:31
hmmm I see
somiaj 2017-03-05 15:56:58
Note with the release of 3.0 the old number version changed
somiaj 2017-03-05 15:57:17
it use to be even numbers stable, odd numbers devel branch, 2.2 vs 2.3, 2.4, etc
somiaj 2017-03-05 16:00:37
honaalz: now it is the releases are X.Y, with some of those releases given long term support (which means they get bug fixes, some hardware backports, some featue backports, but this is raree. and as camh said, after the second number gets big they roll over, but besides for that it is about regular releases in order.
honaalz 2017-03-05 16:02:32
got it! thank you
foul_owl 2017-03-05 16:02:38
Hi folks. smplayer changes monitors when I try and make it full screen
somiaj 2017-03-05 16:03:24
foul_owl: what de/wm are you using?
j4ckcom 2017-03-05 16:20:29
i can extract xz file with this command? tar -xJf file.pkg.tar.xz
tw 2017-03-05 16:20:47
you can just use tar xf file.pkg.tar.xz
tw 2017-03-05 16:20:59
tar will do the right thing.
tw 2017-03-05 16:21:11
cf is a different story though.
foul_owl 2017-03-05 16:24:40
fluxbox
somiaj 2017-03-05 16:26:43
foul_owl: might be how fluxbox is dealing with multihead setup, I would ask in a fluxbox specific channel for better help on that.
