greycat 2017-03-07 04:49:37
I don't know what openpht is.
georgia 2017-03-07 04:49:47
Have any of you looked into Vault 7? I want to know if I should be concerned.
jasonwc 2017-03-07 04:49:55
greycat it's just what i named my custom session
jasonwc 2017-03-07 04:50:05
openpht is a fork of Plex Home Theater
greycat 2017-03-07 04:50:51
Well, you can try it. If that doesn't work, then you'll need to figure out what the command is to start openpht correctly.

ddrescue 2017-03-07 04:57:26
Hi everyone, 2 days ago i run into a issue where im not sure about how to bypass and fix it. at the weekend i've been creating my first uefi bootstick and successfully installed debian on a uefi laptop (dell lat e5550). my system is split on 4 devices which are usb32gb for /root ; usb16gb for / ; microSDcard32gb for /efiboot /var /usr ; hdd500gb for SWAP & /hfiles . since that laptop has no cd/dvd drive i had to install via usb. aft
georgia 2017-03-07 04:57:28
I think it's a development/security issue. It's good to be proactive before these exploits are... exploited. It might be more suited for debian off-topic though.
ddrescue 2017-03-07 04:57:38
the usb boot stick and the drivesnames has changed
ddrescue 2017-03-07 04:57:48
after a reboot i gets a initprompt
ddrescue 2017-03-07 04:59:12
the problem is that the kernel is not recognizing the microSDcard so the partitions cant be mounted
jasonwc 2017-03-07 04:59:31
greycat: I tried all these methods and none work.
jasonwc 2017-03-07 04:59:34
greycat https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/317591/gdm3-change-default-wm-from-gnome-to-i3
greycat 2017-03-07 04:59:42
Oh god, it's gdm.
greycat 2017-03-07 04:59:50
Ugh bleh. Good luck.
jasonwc 2017-03-07 04:59:51
greycat If I choose the session I want in gdm3 it works fine
johnkeates 2017-03-07 04:59:53
god's display manager
ddrescue 2017-03-07 04:59:53
BUT at boot time the sdcard device gets noticed, because the EFI is actualy booting from the dev
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:00:08
YES jason
jasonwc 2017-03-07 05:01:57
greycat I am not attached to gdm, I can use something else
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:02:03
jason you are absolutely right
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:02:03
but i checked the kernel before on the same distro in a live enviroment
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:02:03
and the card has been successfully recognised
greycat 2017-03-07 05:02:03
So yeah, with gdm, you have to set up the .xsession file *AND* you have to click a stupid thing to get it to act like a normal display manager and read the .xsession file in the first place.
georgia 2017-03-07 05:02:03
do you have i3 installed?
georgia 2017-03-07 05:02:03
update-alternatives --config x-session-manager should work
greycat 2017-03-07 05:02:03
He just wants to change the DE for one specific user.
georgia 2017-03-07 05:02:03
and then startx
greycat 2017-03-07 05:02:03
And he is using gdm, not startx.
jasonwc 2017-03-07 05:02:11
greycat will lightdm work?
greycat 2017-03-07 05:02:25
lightdm should read .xsession by default without you having to click "be normal", yes.
georgia 2017-03-07 05:03:45
wdm can switch DEs as well, and "remember" last session.
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:10:43
where can i change the /dev/"name" (sdx) so my boot enviroment is in line again ? i figured out that the install usb bootstick had sda and when its unplugged the next devices gets mounted as sda wich is a big problem because it messes up entire boot of the system ?!? :/
frostschutz 2017-03-07 05:11:50
ddrescue, you don't change the /dev/sdx name. it's first come first serve. don't rely on these names, use uuid/label instead
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:12:33

ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:16:53
eeeew
frostschutz 2017-03-07 05:17:00
ddrescue, Are you new to Linux? Basically any modern distro/install uses UUID for everything by default, there's no reason for you to be concerned about device names. Everything should work regardless which "drive letter" your drives end up with
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:18:10
there are 0000 0010 kinds of people , those who can read binary and those who cannot
greycat 2017-03-07 05:18:10
Maybe he's *old* to Linux, and is thinking of the way things used to be back in the 1990s.
tocix 2017-03-07 05:18:10
There are 10 kinds of people. Those who understand hexadecimal, and F the rest.
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:18:10
aaalright , no frostschutz im not new , but i must say even debian has changed a lot in the past ;) im privately on bsd home ^^
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:18:12
so what could be my issue
greycat 2017-03-07 05:18:35
Your issue is that you think /dev/sdXn is a valid way to refer to a disk in an fstab file.
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:18:37
if it is not the naming of the devices wich my system think it is
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:19:08
so having a look into fstab cant be wrong you say ?
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:19:34
`hey grey , you got manners XD
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:19:41
dont blame me
frostschutz 2017-03-07 05:19:59
what IS your issue? what's the error message? what are you doing, which commands are you using, what's not working?
frostschutz 2017-03-07 05:22:28
you didn't explain that at all. a device being detected as sda (after original sda was unplugged) doesn't cause any problems by itself. That's completely normal...
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:24:18
at fristboot im hanging in the initramfs console the error msg is mmc0 unknown controller version (3) i801_smbus :00:1f.3: failed to enable smbus dev (-16)
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:24:18
mmc0: turning execution failed
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:24:18

ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:24:58
frostschutz i did explained more precisely after i joined here [16:57] Hi everyone,
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:25:45
btw ALERT! /dev/sdd1 does not exist. dropping to a shell
aleph-TA 2017-03-07 05:26:06
does anyone have an idea as to why my DNS would stop working around every 5 hours while using openvpn in a network namespace?
greycat 2017-03-07 05:26:39
Did you try asking #openvpn yet?
aleph-TA 2017-03-07 05:28:24
not yet, i was thinking it's more of a linux issue. i'll try that though
aleph-TA 2017-03-07 05:28:49
thanks for the tip
ddrescue 2017-03-07 05:30:26
any sugguestions ?
petn-randall 2017-03-07 05:30:39
ddrescue: Yes, use UUIDs.
jasonwc 2017-03-07 05:36:57
greycat: gdm3 actually worked better. I couldn't event get lightdm to auto-login a user.
lszyba1 2017-03-07 05:36:57
Hello, I have an issue with my laptop. The mouse keeps moving. How can I "in terminal" see who is moving the mouse: Choice are: Touch screen, touch pad, logitec usb/wireless mouse. ? Would anybody know how I can watch the mouse input source? or which program would that be?
jasonwc 2017-03-07 05:36:57
greycat: For now I set Cinammon to autostart OpenPHT which works fine. However, it would be nice to have OpenPHT setup to start in its own session - less memory usage and nothing running in the background
jasonwc 2017-03-07 05:36:57
works with gdm3 but I have to manually login to set the correct session type
Delf 2017-03-07 05:54:43
Reading the manuals but I don't understand much. Is there a way to use pam to limit the number of GDM sessions certain user can has?
armin 2017-03-07 05:55:54
is there a commandline ipv6 calculator available in debian?
jhutchins 2017-03-07 06:00:08
Delf: The Linux System Administrator's Guide is an excellent general resource: http://www.tldp.org/LDP/sag/html/index.html
jhutchins 2017-03-07 06:00:08
Delf: Not sure it will help, but possible.
ddrescue 2017-03-07 06:00:11
lszyba1 , check the ssh if theres a ctive session, other way would be to write a c prog that filters you the stdout of the device you want and list it into a > any.txt
Delf 2017-03-07 06:00:43
jhutchins: Not sure if the link is actually broken or if it's just me. "www.tldp.org's server DNS address could not be found."
ddrescue 2017-03-07 06:01:14
but you will propably get assembler code or binary , can be helpful but i doubt you want that
tw 2017-03-07 06:02:02
lszyba1: look at xinput and xev. They both allow reading lots of display events from the root window.
ddrescue 2017-03-07 06:02:28
but does it list i/o ?
jhutchins 2017-03-07 06:03:01
Delf: gdm.conf - Max Sessions, but it's not per-user.
ddrescue 2017-03-07 06:03:07
and isnt it a x service so x has to run for xinput to work ?
jelly 2017-03-07 06:03:36
Delf: it's not just you, seems TLDP's domain expired
jhutchins 2017-03-07 06:03:41
Delf: I suspect your DNS, loads fine here.
tw 2017-03-07 06:03:45
ddrescue: you can use both from the terminal remotely using the DISPLAY env variable.
ddrescue 2017-03-07 06:03:57
aah nice , thanks tw

Delf 2017-03-07 06:06:00
jhutchins: Are you using a cache proxy? :P
jhutchins 2017-03-07 06:06:39

Delf 2017-03-07 06:06:39
Can't access the correct content even with the ip#
jelly 2017-03-07 06:06:52
Delf: you can temporarily put "wwww.tldp.org 152.19.134.41" in your /etc/hosts
jelly 2017-03-07 06:06:57
mind the typo

that won't work, use the hosts file workaround
greycat 2017-03-07 06:08:34
Or you can get google's cached copy.
jelly 2017-03-07 06:08:45

jhutchins: wow (i dont use gdm)...i wonder wth they were thinking not being per-user
jhutchins 2017-03-07 06:20:19
missmbob: More oriented toward a thin-client system.
jhutchins 2017-03-07 06:21:23
/etc/security/limits.conf will limit by group or user.
Delf 2017-03-07 06:29:49
jhutchins: I tried the limits.conf, but it does not differentiate between ssh session or gdm
Delf 2017-03-07 06:31:57
I needs to limit the number of gdm sessions for specific users only. Running multi-seat setup and when the same user logs in two seats simultaneously, things become strange
