Guifle 2017-03-09 02:55:23
hello! :) I installed debian, but I cannot "sudo" as my user is not sudoer, terminal says. I found out that I could solve this from grub, but I'd like to ask if there's another way for it?
seoner 2017-03-09 02:55:25
How do I full disk encryption my hard drive on debian?
bluss 2017-03-09 02:55:52
chromium gives an error 'Installation is not enabled.
bezaban 2017-03-09 02:56:22
Guifle: log in as root and add your user to sudoers :)
ychaouche 2017-03-09 02:56:24
i remember playing with rsync between this server and another server
bluss 2017-03-09 02:56:29
(upon trying to add it from the chrome store again. Manual install also did nothing (no error). Reproduces with --temp-profile)
ychaouche 2017-03-09 02:56:37
trying to achieve cloning by rsyinc
bezaban 2017-03-09 02:57:20
Guifle: or rather, for full access, add it to the group sudo
ychaouche 2017-03-09 02:57:32
the uuid given ni the ALERT error message isn't in /dev/disks/by-uuid/
ychaouche 2017-03-09 02:58:00
maybe I have corrupted the /dev/ directory ?
Guifle 2017-03-09 02:58:33
bezaban, so, for the second method, I login with my user, and add it sudo on terminal?
ychaouche 2017-03-09 02:58:34
or the other way around maybe the uuid that is in the ALERT error message has been copied from the other machine I was rsyncing from.
Guifle 2017-03-09 02:58:40
to sudo*
toruvinn 2017-03-09 02:58:41
anyone else has ntpd (package `ntp') die randomly in jessie with nothing left in logs? can work for months and then *poof*.
ychaouche 2017-03-09 02:58:42
but I don't know where to fix it
Brigo 2017-03-09 02:58:48
seoner, you have to reinstall.
seoner 2017-03-09 02:59:09
Brigo: Why? And then?
bezaban 2017-03-09 02:59:16
Guifle: no. you either log in as root (you set the password during install) or issue 'su' then type the root password. Then usermod -a -G username
Brigo 2017-03-09 02:59:44
seoner, you have to create the encryption and the put the system there.
Brigo 2017-03-09 02:59:54
seoner, you can do it with the debian installer.
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:00:51
bezaban, but in order to do these, I need to login with my non-sudo user to my system, right?
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:01:16
Guifle: if you are using the 'su' approach you log in with your user, but you may optionally log in directly as root
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:01:42
the last approach will not work if accessing over ssh though
bluss 2017-03-09 03:01:48
tx: ok so it seems this is not something that has been experienced by all users
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:01:57
(are ssh root logins disabled by default now?)
darxmurf 2017-03-09 03:02:09
password login yes
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:02:14
darxmurf: aye. good :)
seoner 2017-03-09 03:02:16
Brigo: Do you mean - Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM?
Brigo 2017-03-09 03:02:50
seoner, i guess, i have never done that.
Brigo 2017-03-09 03:03:03
seoner, but it looks like quite right.
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:03:26
seoner: that is one option, and the most easy one. You can also to encrypted installations without lvm, but it is quite a bit of back-and-forth
ychaouche 2017-03-09 03:03:49
jelly, thanks for ilo
seoner 2017-03-09 03:03:57
n4dir: What is the different?
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:04:11
the difference is that the one uses lvm and the other doesn't.
Bliepo 2017-03-09 03:04:29
I installed my kernel from backports because of a driver, but since I use automatic-updates for security packages Debian helpfully downgraded my kernel. How do I prevent this from happening? And would it be best to update to the most recent kernel of backports, stay on the current kernel version of backports, or use a specific version from backports?
seoner 2017-03-09 03:04:30
n4dir: And what does that mean?
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:05:02
seoner: i only have a vague understanding of lvm, and can't put it in words. Some people like it, it sure has it advantages, others don't
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:05:03
Bliepo: I'm not sure how that should have happened. Can you provide logs and more details?
Brigo 2017-03-09 03:05:07
Bliepo, holt it.
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:05:10
sorry.
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:05:12
!lvm
dpkg 2017-03-09 03:05:12

n4dir 2017-03-09 03:05:18
well: better than nothing
bluss 2017-03-09 03:05:40
apparently this is intended behaviour. Needs chromium --enable-remote-extensions to work
Bliepo 2017-03-09 03:06:33
dpkg.log or another one?
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:06:49
Bliepo: If you install a kernel from backports, that kernel package will "automagically" track backports so any "apt update && apt upgrade" should give you the current backports kernel. If that kernel got removed, you must have requested it so.
seoner 2017-03-09 03:07:08
n4dir: is it secure to use it togheter with LVM or not?
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:07:10
seoner: this is without lvm, but it is an old writeup and might be out of date http://refracta.freeforums.org/debian-encrypted-installation-t323.html
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:07:21
seoner: sure, using lvm is fine. If you don't know if you want it or not, then you can use it (i guess).
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:07:32
bezaban, what would be the 'groupname' in the user add command?
Donquixote 2017-03-09 03:07:45
Where can I join the offtopic chat?
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:07:45
Guifle: sudo
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:07:46
during installation just choose that option, and everything is nice and easy, not much headaches
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:08:01
bezaban, ah, thank you :)
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:08:13
Guifle: then you need to log in and out (or spawn a login shell) for it to work. Do the first
Bliepo 2017-03-09 03:08:19
petn-randall: I'm certain that is not what happened, because I have an email from unattended-upgrades which specifically says: "Packages that were upgraded:
Bliepo 2017-03-09 03:08:19
linux-compiler-gcc-4.8-x86 linux-headers-3.16.0-4-amd64 linux-headers-3.16.0-4-common linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 linux-libc-dev"
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:08:26
I should stop offering alternate approaches :P
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:09:03
also out & in rather.
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:09:22
seoner: you satisfied?
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:10:02
bezaban, it didn't work, I still can't sudo
seoner 2017-03-09 03:10:06
n4dir: What would you say about using encrypted partition with LVM vs truecrypt
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:10:13
do I need to restart?
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:10:13
Guifle: did you log completely out and in again?
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:10:17
ah no
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:10:31
no restart required
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:10:36
ok
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:10:38
i never heart of anyone using truecrypt to do an encrypted installation with debian, seoner
Bliepo 2017-03-09 03:11:21
seoner: Truecrypt is also discontinued. I'd recommend using Verascrypt instead.
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:11:30
in my case the OS itself doesn't have data which are kinda private, need to be protected. Setting up an encrypted folder in my home would suffice. i would use encfs though
TomTomTosch 2017-03-09 03:12:11
Bliepo: both the stable and backports kernel can be installed at the same time. check dpkg -l linux-image-*
seoner 2017-03-09 03:12:12
Bliepo: Would you use Verascrypt before encryption with LVM?
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:13:02
Guifle: great! Good luck :)
Bliepo 2017-03-09 03:13:16
seoner: I never really looked into it, I just know that Truecrypt has been discontinued and that Veracrypt is a fork of Truecrypt.
seoner 2017-03-09 03:13:17
n4dir: I want full disk encryption, would encfg do the work?
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:13:40
bezaban, thank you :) can I ask another question?
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:13:42
if you want full disk-encryption, then choose the guided way during debian installation and call it a day
Bliepo 2017-03-09 03:14:02
Ah, I see, both 3.16 and 4.9 are installed
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:14:13
to upgrade to stretch, do I only need to replace "jessie" with "stretch" in sources.list file?
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:14:24
Guifle: sure, someone else might have to handle it though
Markow 2017-03-09 03:14:30
Question & issue: I downloaded debian-live-8.7.1-amd64-standard.iso (Debian "Live" CD) and placed the iso on a USB Pen Drive using DD. When I boot up, the menu successfully appears. I chose the 1st option, it partially enters the booting process, and then freezes on "Debian login:". I tried using "nomodeset", "nvidia.modeset=0", and "nouveau.modeset=0". Nothing works.
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:14:35
Guifle: there is extensive documentation online, I'll see if I can find it
Bliepo 2017-03-09 03:14:59
So I will have both kernels installed and I will be able to choose which kernel to boot in Grub, with the highest version being the default?
seoner 2017-03-09 03:19:11
Brigo: configurable like in setup or after the installation?
bezaban 2017-03-09 03:19:11
Brigo: but it was not the one I was after :)
Brigo 2017-03-09 03:19:22
j4ckcom, su didn't found the command
j4ckcom 2017-03-09 03:19:33
Brigo: then how can i do?
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:19:37
j4ckcom: "Command not found" usually means that whatever you try to run isn't installed.
seoner 2017-03-09 03:20:07
n4dir: Then why are people using "manual" full disk encryption and not LVM?
Brigo 2017-03-09 03:20:09
seoner, just try it and see
lroe 2017-03-09 03:20:16
can someone help me understand what would cause my etcap cap_net_raw+eip to be removed?
j4ckcom 2017-03-09 03:20:21
petn-randall: then how can i do?
seoner 2017-03-09 03:20:25
Brigo: Maybe, Thank you.
Brigo 2017-03-09 03:20:29
seoner, np
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:20:31
j4ckcom: Install pip.
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:20:31
seoner: i for one am not much in the mood to get the head into lvm, that is the only reason
j4ckcom 2017-03-09 03:20:40
petn-randall: then how?
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:21:47
seoner: the ones who use it like it pretty much, can give good examples for the advantages, etc.
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:22:06
j4ckcom: Are you running Debian?
j4ckcom 2017-03-09 03:22:17
yes petn-randall
wasanzy 2017-03-09 03:22:17
hello
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:22:17
j4ckcom: apt install pip
j4ckcom 2017-03-09 03:22:17
apt-get install python-pip?
Brigo 2017-03-09 03:22:17
python-pip or python3-pip
j4ckcom 2017-03-09 03:22:17
ok petn-randall ?
wasanzy 2017-03-09 03:22:17
am trying to download ftp://ftp.tw.debian.org/pub/CLE/pub2/frugalware/frugalware-testing/source/lib-extra/srtp/srtp-1.4.2.tgz
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:22:17
j4ckcom: or that
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:22:17
j4ckcom: try it and see.
j4ckcom 2017-03-09 03:22:17
thanks :)
wasanzy 2017-03-09 03:22:17
but am being asked for user and password
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:22:17
wasanzy: I'm not
seoner 2017-03-09 03:22:17
n4dir: may I ask why you not using it?
wasanzy 2017-03-09 03:22:33
petn-randall: I don't understand
wasanzy 2017-03-09 03:22:53
I mean I am being asked to enter user and password when I tried to download the package
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:23:03
i already said so, seoner. As far it's me everything is said.
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:23:05
wasanzy: I can download that file without entering username and password.
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:23:19
wasanzy: What tool are you using?
seoner 2017-03-09 03:23:36
n4dir: ok, thank you.
n4dir 2017-03-09 03:23:55
good luck, take it easy
wasanzy 2017-03-09 03:23:56
petn-randall: google chrome
lysol 2017-03-09 03:27:31
Markow, no it typically auto logs in, dont know what you did to it :)
Markow 2017-03-09 03:27:38
lysol: So, "user" as my username, and "live" as my password?
Markow 2017-03-09 03:28:14
lysol: I did nothing to it, lol! It simply freezes at "debian login: "
Markow 2017-03-09 03:28:32
lysol: Prior to that, the boot process appears to be fine
lysol 2017-03-09 03:28:42
Markow, does it freeze or is it asking you to login?
Markow 2017-03-09 03:28:44
...until it freezes at that point
Markow 2017-03-09 03:28:57
It prompts me to login it seems
Markow 2017-03-09 03:29:00
but it shouldn't
Markow 2017-03-09 03:29:04
It's a "live" cd
Markow 2017-03-09 03:29:10
There should be no login ,right?
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-09 03:29:15
Markow: "freeze" has a specific meaning that is different from "stop".
Markow 2017-03-09 03:29:32
Let's just say, it "pauses" at "Debian login: "
lysol 2017-03-09 03:29:46
have you tried logging in
Markow 2017-03-09 03:29:55
I'm able to type at that point, but how would I know the proper username / password?
lysol 2017-03-09 03:30:04
google ?
Markow 2017-03-09 03:30:04
I tried "root / root"
