hi everyone. I took a hdd with windows out of a laptop and put in a ssd from another computer that has debian on it. The laptop is saying no bootable device found even though the ssd is connected. Uefi issue maybe?
unborn 2017-03-04 15:47:38
I guess sunlight isnt happening
unborn 2017-03-04 15:48:27
Jgd888: did you cloned the hdd or you just simply copied?
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:49:20
unborn i had the ssd in another laptop running debian. All i did was take it out and put it in this other laptop. No cloning or anything
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:49:39
Since it already has a OS on it i want to use after switching laptops
unborn 2017-03-04 15:49:40
that would not work
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:50:18
How old is the UEFI?
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:50:33
really? I thought debian didn't depend on the hardware like windows and a hard drive could be transfered to any machine
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:50:39
Some only boot DOS partitioning
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:50:45
Not sure how old but it's a new laptop
unborn 2017-03-04 15:50:51
you will have to have very very much similar hardware to be able to run it again but you will still have to and must reactivate windows it self
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:50:53
Old computer had uefi too
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:50:58
Some drives don't have boot hardware in them
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:51:09
It does not have windows
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:51:16
Osn't this debian channel?
unborn 2017-03-04 15:51:35
Jgd888: you can try it but if cpu was changed and bios as well.. you more likely to have bsod
unborn 2017-03-04 15:51:41
blue screen of death
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:51:46
I have the same issue here, but I use a usb bootable distro to boot the ssd
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:52:00
bsod is a windows thing. Is unborn a troll?
unborn 2017-03-04 15:52:09
okay
unborn 2017-03-04 15:52:12
good luck then
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:52:20
I can configfile (hd1,gpt1)/boot/grub/grub.cfg boot the ssd
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:52:54
So shadow, i should put a livecd ln a usb and try to use it to get grub and boot from the ssd?
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:53:22
Or would reinstalling debian on the ssd work
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:53:29
it's easier to boot a usb linux and update-grub on it, and use it's menu to select
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:54:32
How do I update-grub? Boot into the live distro and run uodate-grub, then reboot and see if the ssd is listed?
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:54:51
as root, but basically yes
unborn 2017-03-04 15:54:56
aha .. another hdd with debian on it.. well that should work instantly.. sorry I was reading you try to place windows hdd into another laptop
unborn 2017-03-04 15:55:11
my bad
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:55:55
yea unborn i think it should have worked instantly too
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:56:04
Assuming the live distro isn't read-only
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:56:13
CPU shouldn't matter
unborn 2017-03-04 15:56:19
Jgd888: sorry I am not troll, I just read it all wrong..
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:56:33
no problem
unborn 2017-03-04 15:57:03
yeah, Jgd888 what I would do try is to disable/enable uefi - depends what you will see when you log into bios
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:57:34
Some systems are sensitive to if the ssd is SATA II or SATA III
unborn 2017-03-04 15:57:41
Jgd888: most of the times when I move around the bare metal with my existing system, I just plug it in and it works instantly
unborn 2017-03-04 15:57:49
am also on ssd
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 15:57:53
sata 2 bootable... sata 3 fail
unborn 2017-03-04 15:58:11
Jgd888: I should have somewhere here button
unborn 2017-03-04 15:58:22
been changing machine about 4 times

crap it does not say if ssd.. but basically you should be able to just plug disk in and continue to work
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:59:35
I tried
Jgd888 2017-03-04 15:59:44
:(
piklu 2017-03-04 16:00:00
unborn : I removed xrdp and installed again, i removed the /etc/init.d file manually, now its not generating it. any help ?
unborn 2017-03-04 16:00:05
Jgd888: even with uefi optoin on and off?
unborn 2017-03-04 16:00:22
Jgd888: is the disc encrypted?
Jgd888 2017-03-04 16:02:45
unborn yes it is
Jgd888 2017-03-04 16:02:55
Is that a problem? Luks
piklu 2017-03-04 16:03:01
unborn : I removed xrdp and installed again, i removed the /etc/init.d file manually, now its not generating it. any help ?
unborn 2017-03-04 16:03:18
piklu: - wow.. well that is outside of my scope.. well its not but I would suggest you to reinstall that machine. missmbob said you could connect to gnome if there on that linux box is vnc server.. which to me looks like its not possible, unless its really outside of my scope.. I had no sunlight from him regards his last reply so.. best bet would be to reinstall machine and use xcfe as end view for your remote vnc session..
unborn 2017-03-04 16:03:22
sorry about troubles
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 16:04:45
vncviewer worked for me long ago. just need to know the port (5900) on the host machine and not have it blocked by firewall
unborn 2017-03-04 16:04:51
Jgd888: ah - well.. that will not work.. you changed the hardware - to be honest with you I dont really know if that does read signature of the hardware but it should - and I am not troll - just saying. encrypted disk onto another machine is possible but its outside of my scope.
unborn 2017-03-04 16:05:23
I mean to give advice to someones else data.. I cannot help
Jgd888 2017-03-04 16:05:32
Oh ok
epsilon 2017-03-04 16:06:32
vnc, rdesktop, spicy... many options these days
unborn 2017-03-04 16:07:30
Shadow_7_: yeh for me last time in 2009 :) but that was last time.. and no gnome session possible.. maybe I am wrong
unborn 2017-03-04 16:08:09
piklu: or just use ssh - for me that is the best option.. sorry im a bit old
piklu 2017-03-04 16:08:21
unborn : I agree however ssh -X is too slow
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 16:08:39
I want to say x11vnc on the host. When you viewed and stopped the viewer, the host stopped hosting
unborn 2017-03-04 16:09:39
piklu: may I ask after those hours.. what on earth you need gui for? I mean on server..
piklu 2017-03-04 16:10:10
unborn : I have a developer and me, I need to continue my workflow and setup environment for him. I need a remote linux environment
unborn 2017-03-04 16:10:18
Shadow_7_: I would agree with him.. x is slow over net.. from usa to uk.. its just pain
unborn 2017-03-04 16:10:38
piklu: sure, thats sounds about right
unborn 2017-03-04 16:11:01
piklu: and whats the purpose of that dev work? source code?
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 16:11:07
I found it surprisingly performant... on local 10/100 ethernet
unborn 2017-03-04 16:11:54
Shadow_7_: did you just read what I said.. I was talking about 1000+miles.. not local network
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 16:12:37
I know, but there are other options and not all interwebs suck. x2go is what the nubs seem to favor these days
piklu 2017-03-04 16:12:42
unborn : We need to create a primary dev environment to code projects, like a MMORPG backend, some java jobs, I will use docker and python and eclipse etc
unborn 2017-03-04 16:12:44
and I believe piklu was talking same
unborn 2017-03-04 16:12:57
sure
piratepete 2017-03-04 16:13:01
anyone here running an old IRC program that would stay on in your terminal and you could logout and then come back to the terminal later and IRC was still there? I forget the name of it. It's been years but I liked it.
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 16:13:25
piratepete: irssi and screen
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 16:13:34
or tmux
unborn 2017-03-04 16:13:51
piklu: you may consider very fast environment with some version control like a git
piratepete 2017-03-04 16:13:57
unborn 2017-03-04 16:14:03
no gui is need it at all, its easy
stoned 2017-03-04 16:14:27
can be any client in screen
stoned 2017-03-04 16:14:35
I switch between irssi and weechat
unborn 2017-03-04 16:14:35
piratepete: yes.. you may consider znc on your server..
piklu 2017-03-04 16:14:50
unborn : yes, only if I was using linux locally, a typical problem comes when the flow of your work is gone by rebooting computers, coming back from work etc, on a server I am very confident I can simply work in the manner I need without interupption
piratepete 2017-03-04 16:15:18
is there an install of irssi for debian e.g. apt-get install irssi?
unborn 2017-03-04 16:15:26
one chan one login to all your chans whenever you go off, you will be still presented also once you log in you would read logs.. google it znc
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 16:15:32
piratepete: yes even xirssi for nubs
unborn 2017-03-04 16:15:34
,v znc
judd 2017-03-04 16:15:35
Package: znc on amd64 -- wheezy: 0.206-2; jessie: 1.4-2; jessie-backports: 1.6.4-1~bpo8+1; stretch: 1.6.4-1; sid: 1.6.4-1+b1
unborn 2017-03-04 16:15:42
its even in repos
unborn 2017-03-04 16:16:21
yes piklu git works even offline
unborn 2017-03-04 16:16:35
you do your changes to code, then you pull and push and you done
unborn 2017-03-04 16:17:03
other developer simply pull and edit your code, then once he is ready he just push it back
unborn 2017-03-04 16:17:15
so you can both be synced
unborn 2017-03-04 16:17:21
or more of you
unborn 2017-03-04 16:17:45
piklu: good example is github.. :)
somiaj 2017-03-04 16:17:49
piratepete: you will also need something like tmux or screen to run the terminal irc client in.
unborn 2017-03-04 16:18:13
1+ somiaj for screen
stoned 2017-03-04 16:18:31
google screen vs tmux pros and cons
unborn 2017-03-04 16:18:44
but I still think you can run some irc bouncer even if you use terminal
piratepete 2017-03-04 16:21:22
I am in irssi and I logged off freenode but it wouldn't let me identify
unborn 2017-03-04 16:21:40
piklu: repos on your computer will be always yours.. when you pull you will get his or their updates to your code from server and it will merge to your own code changes.. if no conflicts then your can push it back to server so others can update.. also it will tell you who was changed what and you would be able to retrieve it back if anything wrong.
somiaj 2017-03-04 16:21:51
piratepete: you may want #freenode or an irssi channel for that. But you can configure auto identify in irssi
unborn 2017-03-04 16:21:51
there are even web apps for it
piratepete 2017-03-04 16:22:38
somiaj: thanks
unborn 2017-03-04 16:22:43
no vnc or any other crap need it piklu
unborn 2017-03-04 16:26:14
heck you can run this even without server if you run linux on your machine.. piklu if not you only need somewhere cheap linux machine. I can help you with git web gui as well.
piklu 2017-03-04 16:26:30
git web gui ??
unborn 2017-03-04 16:27:37
ah
unborn 2017-03-04 16:27:46
:) piklu one moment
unborn 2017-03-04 16:28:46
piklu: that is just an example.. this is web gui (the ugly way) of git repository.. keep in mind this was my home project..
unborn 2017-03-04 16:29:11
git repos in terminal looks much better for me but its only personal preference...
unborn 2017-03-04 16:29:19

unborn 2017-03-04 16:31:15
piklu: you can see changes and all sort of rubbish you do to your code.. that repo is just a demo - i mean its real but its just demo :)
unborn 2017-03-04 16:31:34
stoned: yes.
unborn 2017-03-04 16:31:51
but its more about other things..
stoned 2017-03-04 16:33:12
sure.
stoned 2017-03-04 16:33:17
want me to show you how fastly?
piklu 2017-03-04 16:33:20
unborn : i have used things which allow for online coding, like codeanywhere, icecoder etc, they are similar.....but to be honest working on linux environment helps
piklu 2017-03-04 16:33:41
unborn : I believe I need to work on more complicated stuff.
unborn 2017-03-04 16:34:02

sawthewhat 2017-03-04 16:34:05
how to scroll my screen?
piklu 2017-03-04 16:34:13

missmbob 2017-03-04 16:34:16

unborn 2017-03-04 16:34:17

unborn 2017-03-04 16:35:42
if that was what you mean
ghormoon 2017-03-04 16:36:21
hi, is there something like hddscan in repos? that would be able to write some random data (or patterns) over whole disk and then read it listing slow parts/sectors of there are any?
unborn 2017-03-04 16:36:45
piklu: pardon me.. linux kernel the very base is controlled by git

sawthewhat 2017-03-04 16:38:58
im new here. and, why i can't use some commands in channels? i typed many commands and pressed enter. irssi echoed nothing to me.
missmbob 2017-03-04 16:39:20
freenode doesnt support *all* commands
unborn 2017-03-04 16:39:30

stoned 2017-03-04 16:39:47
What?
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-04 16:39:51
