n-Ice: i want mempo and it requires wheezy, so which wheezy is the easiest, and when mempo is ready for prime time?
n-iCe 2017-03-06 12:46:43
no idea what mempo is, sorry
somiaj 2017-03-06 12:47:34
wheezy is quote old, so don't know if something is under current development it needs such an old version of debian
somiaj 2017-03-06 12:47:37
,v mempo
judd 2017-03-06 12:47:43
No package named 'mempo' was found in amd64.

https://wiki.debian.org/Mempo
rudi_s 2017-03-06 12:49:07
guest|72488: Forget it and use something else. Reading the wiki page sounds very much like the project is dead.
guest|72488 2017-03-06 12:49:19
been on hold
guest|72488 2017-03-06 12:49:53
weird...was so promising...what's next best?
somiaj 2017-03-06 12:49:56
,v mempo-deb

guest|72488: What exactly are you looking for?
guest|72488 2017-03-06 12:50:59
rudi_s: pretty much all that mempo has been aspiring to be
somiaj 2017-03-06 12:51:30
guest|72488: I'd ask on #mempo about current status, a lot of that info on that page is outdated (made before the jessie release)
plujon 2017-03-06 13:07:14
What version of Debian are the binary packages on snapshot.debian.org compiled against?
plujon 2017-03-06 13:07:31
E.g. http://snapshot.debian.org/package/chromium-browser/56.0.2924.76-5/
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:38:43
c-c: I just tried doing the ZFS on Root tutorial in a VM, but installed all grub's dependencies from jessie before intalling grub from Stretch. It worked. It didn't require any depeendencies from Stretch at all.
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:38:53
VM booted from ZFS root w/o issue as well
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:39:06
so, I guess this is one of those easy cases
c-c 2017-03-06 13:39:56
so, what happens on next grub update?
c-c 2017-03-06 13:40:01
8D
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:40:43
I can always pin it so that it doesn't upgrade
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:41:24
And it's using the Stretch version, so it should only upgrade for targeted bug fixes or security updates - once the dependencies are installed it shouldn't upgrade those. Presumably.
c-c 2017-03-06 13:41:36
what if zfs requires grub update
c-c 2017-03-06 13:41:54
well, who knows, maybe it will work great
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:42:11
Yeah, then I'm screwed, but I think in this case it was just a matter of using a version of Grub that understands ZFS.
c-c 2017-03-06 13:42:21
I often have to remove and reinstall when updates bump old libs or something
c-c 2017-03-06 13:42:38
I guess snapshots take the risk out
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:42:52
c-c I was able to cleanly upgrade to Stretch with the grub from unstable
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:42:55
I tested that last night
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:43:13
once on stretch it shouldn't matter since the install will then be pure
jasonwc 2017-03-06 13:43:19
but something could change to break that
c-c 2017-03-06 13:44:11
yeah just get openpht version for your target release
ScottE 2017-03-06 13:44:14
stretch should be fine, just have to watch out when the kernel ABI changes and it takes awhile for updated zfs and spl DKMS packages to get updated. Same problem as for nvidia-dkms
