Iridos 2017-03-01 04:48:02
hey, or he could install ffmpeg from backports…
cronic 2017-03-01 04:51:15
Anyone know where I can find some in depth documentation on dpkg and how it handles packages/broken packages?
Iridos 2017-03-01 04:53:16
the manpage… /usr/share/doc/dpkg … the source?
cronic 2017-03-01 04:54:33
I was hoping for a TRM or something instead of combing through the source.
cronic 2017-03-01 04:54:43
The manpage doesn't give me what Im looking for.
cronic 2017-03-01 04:55:12
I broke several packages by using a repo, reverted back to standard debian repo and now I've got broken packages.
cronic 2017-03-01 04:55:31
aptitude tried fixing them, sucked up 92GB of RAM and took the server down in the process.
Iridos 2017-03-01 04:55:46
it's mainly apt that tries to resolve dependencies, not dpkg
cronic 2017-03-01 04:56:01
Right but it looks like I need to do this manually.
cronic 2017-03-01 04:56:15
Set the version of these packages to a lower version than testing and update from apt.
Iridos 2017-03-01 04:56:18
re-installing is probably easier
Iridos 2017-03-01 04:56:26
and ends up cleaner
cronic 2017-03-01 04:56:34
I'd prefer not reinstalling the OS.
cronic 2017-03-01 04:56:42
netbase is one of the broken packages.
cronic 2017-03-01 04:56:46
install --reinstall doesn't fix it.
rockon 2017-03-01 04:56:52
hello
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 04:57:52
cronic: apt-get -f install
cronic 2017-03-01 04:57:59
Tried it.
cronic 2017-03-01 04:58:15
Even aptitude can't fix these.
cronic 2017-03-01 04:58:19
I borked it good.
rockon 2017-03-01 04:58:32
ethernet connection in debian and hp probook seems to have a problem. I have my hp probook dual booted with windows and debian 8, and whenever ethernet wire is connected on my laptop on windows a green light blinks on the port but not on debian
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 04:58:38
cronic: so what's in the way? you can dpkg -i --force /var/cache/apt/archives/package.deb to get past certain hurdles
rockon 2017-03-01 04:58:38
it says ethernet disconnected
rockon 2017-03-01 04:59:28
same happens with hp pavillion
rockon 2017-03-01 04:59:32
and ubuntu
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 04:59:32
rockon: dhcp is by default on for windows, so whatever gets plugged in, automagically configures itself
cronic 2017-03-01 04:59:38
Shadow_7, dpkg: error: unknown force/refuse option '/var/cache/apt/archives/package.deb'
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 04:59:58
rockon: running dhclient -4 -v eth0 or whatever applies probably brings it to an equivalent state
cronic 2017-03-01 05:00:03
Shadow_7, not sure what's in the way. The packages that the repo installed are newer than Testing repo.
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:00:08
cronic: --force-all
Iridos 2017-03-01 05:00:08
you could probably re-install into a chroot on a different partition using debootstrap
cronic 2017-03-01 05:00:12
So it wont downgrade them, and it wont install some items.
cronic 2017-03-01 05:00:13
Ill try that.
rockon 2017-03-01 05:00:25
Shadow_7: dhcp comes into picture when eth0 link is ready i suppose?
Iridos 2017-03-01 05:00:30
fixing dependencies with a lot of packages trying to break them is an uphill struggle
cronic 2017-03-01 05:00:38
Shadow_7, No such file or directory.
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:00:51
cronic: man dpkg ... you can force individual aspects or just --force-all and to break it all, not best practices at this point basically.
cronic 2017-03-01 05:01:17
I tried that as well with the broken packages. It just tells me it can't do that.
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:01:32
cronic: for the package that is failing, tab completion is your friend. It was not a literal command.
rockon 2017-03-01 05:01:33
Shadow_7: in my case when i do dmesg, it says eth0 is not ready
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:02:00
rockon: perhaps you're missing firmware. $ dmesg | grep -i firm
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:02:11
rockon: Please clarify, it works in Windows but not in Linux?
cronic 2017-03-01 05:02:16
rockon, can you ifconfig eth0 up ?
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:02:36
rockon: Also, how is the network configured? interfaces or network_manager?
rockon 2017-03-01 05:02:45
cronic: u mean ip link set eth0 up
rockon 2017-03-01 05:02:47
?
cronic 2017-03-01 05:03:02
I still use ifconfig. lol
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:03:03
rockon: functionally equivalent probably
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:03:17
rockon: or ifup circa long ago
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:03:52
But if you're missing firmware, the driver doesn't function so futile
cronic 2017-03-01 05:04:20
I still remember using ipfwadm for firewalling.
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:05:00
I remember debating ipchains or iptables, but ipchains was all but deprecated at that point anyway
rockon 2017-03-01 05:05:15
Shadow_7: it behaves in a weird way. Sometimes it is eth0 is down and then i restart several times and then eth0 functions properly
cronic 2017-03-01 05:05:50
rockon, that almost sounds like hardware. Or a module failure.
rockon 2017-03-01 05:05:51
Shadow_7: if it is a firmware problem, then this shouldn't happen
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:06:13
rockon: perhaps there's newer firmware that fixes that? or newer driver, probably on github. $ lspci -nnk | grep -i eth
rockon 2017-03-01 05:06:48
cronic: i have consulted my friends and they have the same problem too
rockon 2017-03-01 05:07:02
Shodow_7: your command returns : Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller [10ec:8168] (rev 07)
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:07:25
rockon: heh... same ethernet here... but (rev 06)
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:07:56
rockon apt-get install firmware-realtek
rockon 2017-03-01 05:08:22
Shadow_7:already the newest version
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:08:43
It can be quirky if the ethernet cable isn't top quality
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:09:18
Assuming that it works at all
rockon 2017-03-01 05:09:27
Shadow_7: i don't think that is the problem because it works fine on windows
bolovanos 2017-03-01 05:09:50
hithere
bolovanos 2017-03-01 05:09:50
I have txt file, by doing "cat file.txt | grep xyz | less" i will get only subset of "less -> / -> xy"
rockon 2017-03-01 05:09:51
Shadow_7: also my friends who have hp laptop are also experiencing this issue
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:10:02
Mine's working fine in linux, although slightly different (rev 06)
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:10:15
the question is still how you configure internet connection, rockon via network-manager ? i am not sure if /etc/network/interfaces is still used (if yes, you can't use both, the file and a graphical network-manager)
rockon 2017-03-01 05:10:46
Shadow_7: how can i install rev06?
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:10:51
also what does "dhclient -v eth0" give (if it ain't connected, if it is first release with dhclient -r eth0)
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:10:57
n4dir: interfaces can still be used and should cause NM to ignore anything configured there (ie not manage it).
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:11:13
I configure mine manually by old methods... ifconfig eth0 192.168.2.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 mtu 1440 up && route add default gw 192.168.2.1
rockon 2017-03-01 05:11:28
n4dir: i use gui but /etc/network/interfaces is also present
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:11:37
rockon: (rev 06) via output of lspci, it's a hardware difference.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:11:58
rockon: If the interface is configured in interfaces, please pastebin the contents of that file.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:11:59
!paste
dpkg 2017-03-01 05:12:00
Do not paste more than 2 lines to this channel. Instead, use: http://paste.debian.net/ http://pastie.org/ or http://picpaste.com/ for pics. Use wikisend.com for large files (think tar.gz) up to 100MB. Remember to tell us the URL of your paste! Cannot cut and paste? Ask me about , , .
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:12:10
rockon: perhaps you need the amd64-microcode
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:12:13
rockon: though jhutchins_wk says otherwise, i think using both, file and a gui network-manager can (can!) give problems
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:12:58
n4dir: Expected behavior is if an interface (eth0) is configured in interfaces, NM will show it as "Not Managed".
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:13:21
I also manually stop all networking extras installed via service / systemctl, before I manually config the network.
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:13:28
jhutchins_wk: fine for me. Just shooting some ideas where to look for the culprit
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:13:56
won't hurt if he pastes his interfaces file, as you proposed
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:14:24
sounds more like the interface file is whatever the distro supplied.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:14:30
n4dir: I suspect it might be "auto" vs. "allow-hotplug".
rockon 2017-03-01 05:16:15
here's my interfaces file: http://pastebin.com/eyVaVMad
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:17:57
i can't see an entry for eth0
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:18:12
rockon: Anything in /etc/network/interfaces.d/*?
Introoter 2017-03-01 05:18:22
testing /amsg
rockon 2017-03-01 05:19:01
jhutchins_wk: it's empty
rockon 2017-03-01 05:21:08
jhutchins_wk: n4dir: Shadow_7: any ideas?
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:21:39
rockon: do you have any networking over that interface at all?
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:21:54
connect via network-manager, if that's what you use. or for troubleshooting: dhclient -v eth0 (perhaps).
rockon 2017-03-01 05:22:05
Shadow_7: i have wlan0
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:22:40
rockon: and $(ifconfig a) shows eth0 ?
rockon 2017-03-01 05:22:48
Shadow_7: yup
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:22:52
rockon: dhclient -4 -v eth0
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:23:04
with root perms ofc...
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:23:14
might drop your wlan0 in favor of ethernet
Donquixote 2017-03-01 05:24:02
Is there a german debian channel?
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:24:10
yes.
Donquixote 2017-03-01 05:24:27
Is it called #debian-de?
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:24:38
dunno, just checking
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:25:32
looks like it's #deban.de ? (odd), probably on oftc
petn-randall 2017-03-01 05:25:43

Shadow_7: n4dir: i can successfully ping google.com now. But as i told u it sometimes works and sometimes won't. Behaves in a weird way. But since it is working now, i suppose i cannot troubleshoot the actual cause
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:27:56
rockon: random-ness is either cable quality or other hardware / driver problems
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:28:10
write down the given commands for troubleshooting when the problem occurs again, rockon
rockon 2017-03-01 05:28:30
Shadow_7: what's amd64-microcde u mentioned earlier?
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:29:13
Stuff that loads into the CPU for various arches. intel has one too ... packages intel-microcode or amd64-microcode
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:29:43
Normally included in the initrd image of the kernel, or an additional entry on the bootloaders line for the initrd
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:30:36
basically it's software for the hardware to help it cope with any known issues the hardware might have.
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:30:55
or in intels case, on some skews, to disable overclocking on non-K model cips
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:30:58
chips*
rockon 2017-03-01 05:31:53
Shadow_7: so, isn't it installed by default?
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:32:14
it generally doesn't prevent the hardware from working, just helps it run better.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:32:20
rockon: Usually detected & installed, but not always.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 05:32:44
rockon: You should see it loading in dmesg.
n4dir 2017-03-01 05:33:31
at least intel-microcode is non-free or contrib. so i am not sure if or how it should install automatically.
rockon 2017-03-01 05:35:31
Well, i just learned that amd64-microcode is also non-free
petn-randall 2017-03-01 05:35:38
Shadow_7: Check the changelog of intel-microcode, there have been cases where they patched out certain CPU instructions. Which caused all kinds of processes to fail when you patched that at runtime.
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:36:33
I only know if the microcode because arch would have it and grub would only grab the .cfg for the microcode, and not include the kernel initrc image by default.
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:36:53
rendering arch not bootable
babilen 2017-03-01 05:36:56

Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:37:54
It's always a good read to find the "undocumented" opcodes on sandpile.org

Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:41:10

rockon 2017-03-01 05:42:07
haa
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:42:11
petn-randall: probably why intel is laying 12k employs this year. Or not
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 05:42:48
or was that last year. m$ 3k, intel 12k, hp 4k, oracle 1k, ... ... ... anyone out here hiring?
