FinalX 2017-03-01 06:55:45
in stretch, there's only mariadb and no mysql
gomoran 2017-03-01 06:56:17
FinalX: Yes, but is this temporary or permanent.
FinalX 2017-03-01 07:00:17
gomoran: since stretch is frozen, permanent
gomoran 2017-03-01 07:00:30
FinalX: O.K. Thanks

Hey, yesterday I totally destroyed the font system on my debian installation. Any ideas how to fix it?
dontknow 2017-03-01 07:07:13
lf94, do you mean you broke the font rendering?
lf94 2017-03-01 07:07:22
I suppose
lf94 2017-03-01 07:07:36
All fonts are now defaulting to this serif monospace font
lf94 2017-03-01 07:07:47
I still have infinality, which is broken
lf94 2017-03-01 07:07:59
That was my main goal: to remove it
dontknow 2017-03-01 07:08:48
my font rendering had broken before. i had to reinstall
lf94 2017-03-01 07:09:38
there must be a way to re-install the font packages
lf94 2017-03-01 07:09:42
and recreate the defaults
alpharray 2017-03-01 07:31:51
Hello
alpharray 2017-03-01 07:32:35
I am running debian as my main host, I have some IDE's running but I would like them to run their programs inside a Virtual Machine (Debian)
alpharray 2017-03-01 07:32:57
I don't know how to accomplish this task...
dumbl3d0re 2017-03-01 07:34:44
Differs from IDE to IDE.
dumbl3d0re 2017-03-01 07:35:16
Probably easiest to ask in the IDE's support channels.
alpharray 2017-03-01 07:35:25
dumbl3d0re: Oh, ok. Thanks
the_punisher 2017-03-01 07:35:53

the_punisher 2017-03-01 07:36:26
dont work
dumbl3d0re 2017-03-01 07:37:20
alpharray: You can share a directory between the host and VMs
the_punisher 2017-03-01 07:38:18

!doesn't work
dpkg 2017-03-01 07:38:59
"Doesn't work" is a vague statement. Does it sit on the couch all day long? Does it procrastinate doing the dishes? Does it beg on the street for change? Please be specific! Define 'it' and what it isn't doing. Give us more details so we can help you without needing to ask basic questions like "what's the error message?". Ask me about , and .

hey all, anyone know if i can use globs with Popen with shell=False?
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:28:51
Im touching ay of update-rc.d and hope know if I can remove any script put here?
greycat 2017-03-01 08:30:10
dannyLopez: manual removal of the S* and K* symlinks from /etc/rc*.d/ directories is respected as you, the local sysadmin, making an explicit change, and Debian will not circumvent that.
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:32:32
note if using systemd, those directories might not be respected, better to disable the corresponding units
greycat 2017-03-01 08:33:01
Right, update-rc.d is a sysvinit thing, for wheezy and older, or for jessie+ packages that for whatever reason have not yet been migrated to systemd.
greycat 2017-03-01 08:33:31
Or in other words, What are you trying to do? On what version of Debian? To what package?
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:35:07
Ok, try to aotu star a tomcat scrip, in stable.
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:35:30
Auto*
greycat 2017-03-01 08:35:31
"auto start"?
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:35:42
Yes.
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:35:44
you are most likely using systemd, so if you put the LSB script in /etc/init.d/ you should be able to see it with systemctl, but it would be more efficent to write a unit file
greycat 2017-03-01 08:35:47
Is this script part of a Debian package, or are you doing this all from scratch?
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:36:05
dannyLopez: do you want the script to run when tomcat is brought up/down normally?
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:36:31
Tomcat is part of Debian, but the server DHIS no.
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:37:22
I follow this tuto http://pastebin.com/PEBKVArz
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:38:06
that is kinda dated.
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:38:56
:O
greycat 2017-03-01 08:39:10
Unless you are *extremely* well versed in sysvinit and start-stop-daemon scripts on Debian for some reason, it is enormously easier to write a systemd unit file than to write a sysvinit script with all the LSB *bullshit* that Debian's sysvinit expects.
OS-27110 2017-03-01 08:40:39
haha i thought i was in the offsec channel
OS-27110 2017-03-01 08:40:45
fck sake :)
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:41:06
dannyLopez: all that looks like it is doing is making a start up script for tomcat, does tomcat in debian not already come with a unit file to start/stop it on boot/reboot?
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:42:18
somiaj: Tomcat yes, but tomcat-dhis no
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:43:21
dannyLopez: the tomcat unit file should be in /lib/systemd/system/tomcat.service or something like that, copy it to /etc/systemd/system/tomcat-dhis.service and adjust it to what you need.
greycat 2017-03-01 08:43:43
You shouldn't copy a whole unit file to /etc/systemd/system/
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:43:55
greycat: why not?
greycat 2017-03-01 08:44:00
You should just make your tiny little local changes in /etc/systemd/system/foobar.service to override individual parts of the Debian one
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:44:24
oh so both unit files would be used, I thought if you wanted local changes you copied the whole thing over.
dannyLopez 2017-03-01 08:45:10
Ok, Ill try this somiaj, but now, how can I delete the 2 script that I put?
somiaj 2017-03-01 08:45:20
dannyLopez: sure
FaTony 2017-03-01 08:54:09
hi, I installed a debian system on my phone using Lil' Debi. How can I ssh into it? I have AFWall+ in whitelist mode
edeca 2017-03-01 09:13:03
I am trying to build a custom Jessie CD using build-simple-cdd. However it fails because vim-tiny is not installable. This seems to be due to a security release of vim-common, which fails the ==version test. Is there any way to convince simple-cdd to honour or ignore security updates?
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 09:14:43
edeca: do you have the jessie-updates in your sources.list too? Would jigdo suite your needs?
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 09:15:05
dpkg sources.list
dpkg 2017-03-01 09:15:05
A suitable /etc/apt/sources.list for Debian 8 "Jessie" has three lines: "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ jessie main" "deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main" "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main". Be sure to run «aptitude update» after editing sources.list. Also see and "man sources.list".
userro 2017-03-01 09:17:20
I've detected a dependency incompatibility in between two packages
edeca 2017-03-01 09:17:21
Shadow_7: Good point on jessie-updates. I'll check if simple-cdd includes that :)
userro 2017-03-01 09:17:30

userro: you can have multiple gcc's. The default is whatever /usr/bin/gcc symlinks to. Or whatever environment vars are set to, but not always respected by the build scripts. CC, CXX, ... ... ...
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 09:29:55
There can be issues with building something with multiple gcc versions. Like kernel things need to be built with the same gcc that built the kernel.
userro 2017-03-01 09:30:37
ok
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 09:31:15
In the end there can be only one ... ... ... (default) ...
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:42:49
Hello. As of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext4#Delayed_allocation_and_potential_data_loss , is it safe to use ext4 in a little environment that is 24/7 running?
petemc 2017-03-01 09:44:08
Plushwolf: lots of people, myself included, do
alpharray 2017-03-01 09:44:25
Hello
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:45:16
And is it wise to use XFS for a little server?
petemc 2017-03-01 09:45:19
i dont
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:45:42
You dont what?
missmbob 2017-03-01 09:46:43
xfs is good for really large files. that's about it.
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 09:46:57
I've had issues with xfs. If you hard crash you may need to boot another linux to make / bootable again
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 09:47:11
Not such issues with ext4 and it can check/fix as part of booting it
missmbob 2017-03-01 09:47:15
there's a reason ext4 is default
Shadow_7 2017-03-01 09:47:50
xfs is mildly faster on slow storage
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:48:55
We are running some QEMU machines, about 100 GB for each machine, not accessed 24/7 day, but 24/7 running, and I'm not sure what FS I should use. I tend to XFS, but I'm not sure ...
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:49:37
And I have read both ext4 and XFS have delayed allocation in RAM ... so where's the real difference?
missmbob 2017-03-01 09:52:49
Plushwolf: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/33552/htg-explains-which-linux-file-system-should-you-choose/
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:54:14
missmbob: Okay, thanks for the link ... so, ext4 looks like the standard to me, but is there a way to disable delayed allocation?
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 09:54:35
Plushwolf: I tend to like to stick pretty close to defaults. It makes it a lot easier to hand off administration to new people.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-01 09:54:52
Plushwolf: We use ext4 on several thousand high availability servers.
missmbob 2017-03-01 09:54:57
Plushwolf: mount with data=journal
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:55:17
missmbob: Oh, data=nournal disables that?
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:55:20
* journal
missmbob 2017-03-01 09:55:29
in ext4 it does. i dont know about xfs

One is a VM and the other one is my main host
Plushwolf 2017-03-01 09:55:58

alpharray 2017-03-01 09:56:03
I am trying to edit code on the main machine while running it over the VM
alpharray 2017-03-01 09:56:10

that's my default iptable in debian 8 ( https://paste.debian.net/917521/ ) and it blocks incomming connection to ports like 8080 , 8011. When i flush it no problem. What chain'rule causes the issue?
missmbob 2017-03-01 10:22:38
chomwitt: iptables support is in #netfilter
tdn 2017-03-01 10:22:48
In tinyca 0.7.5-5, there is a security bug that makes all certificates generated in this version use the broken sha1 algorithm and sha2 suite is not possible to use at all. This seems to be fixed in 0.7.5-6, but this version is NOT in stable. Only in testing. Since sha1 certs stopped working in all major browsers since January 2017, I think it is fair to say that this should be fixed in stable as a security up
tdn 2017-03-01 10:22:54
date. How can I know if this is already happening?
tdn 2017-03-01 10:23:53
I mean, should I report a bug on this? (likely already been done since it is fixed in testing) Or some other way to propose this fix be included in stable. It is a somewhat trivial fix according to the patch I have seen for this
missmbob 2017-03-01 10:25:06
well that's the laste version of the software, so no
missmbob 2017-03-01 10:25:10
latest*
chomwitt 2017-03-01 10:25:30
missmbob: thanks
missmbob 2017-03-01 10:25:30
you should be talking to the tinyca people about updating their software
tdn 2017-03-01 10:25:42
missmbob, email to the maintainer of this package?
missmbob 2017-03-01 10:26:01
tdn: no, directly upstream
peterS 2017-03-01 10:26:59
missmbob: yes but debian already has that fix. Just not in stable. I think you're missing the point of tdn's question
missmbob 2017-03-01 10:27:47
ok
peterS 2017-03-01 10:27:48
as tdn notes, debian _did_ patch tinyca, but tdn thinks this bugfix is important enough to also be applied to the stable release. The question is, is this in progress, and if not, how to start the process of doing so
peterS 2017-03-01 10:29:02
tdn: the answer is, probably it is not being done. I see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=759481 is closed and archived, and since it was only severity 'important', that's not considered high enough to risk a stable update
judd 2017-03-01 10:29:03
Bug http://bugs.debian.org/759481 in tinyca (closed, patch): «tinyca: No support for SHA2 as a signature algorithm. SHA1 gets deprecated in 2016.»; severity: important; opened: 2014-08-27; last modified: 2016-01-31.
peterS 2017-03-01 10:29:30
judd, thanks
