Shadow_7 2017-03-02 08:47:58
Or earth first, we'll pave the other planets later
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:04:53
hey. There was a power outage during an update, and gnome-themes-standard is corrupted. I cannot even remove it. I tried clean, autoclean, dpkg configure, apt --fix-broken-install and nothing worked... Any ideas?
c-c 2017-03-02 09:06:23
noqnio1: did you try purge? 8)
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:06:26
noqnio1: rm the /var/cache/apt/archives/...gnome...deb
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:06:37
noqnio1: and then apt-get install --reinstall ...gnome...deb
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:07:20
@Shadow_7: did not work :/
c-c 2017-03-02 09:07:32
apt-get purge gnome-...
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:07:33
@c-c I am afraid it will remove gnome itself
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:07:40
noqnio1: how about... dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/...gnome...deb
c-c 2017-03-02 09:07:56
noqnio1: so you didn't "remove" either...
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:08:05
apt-get doesnt work
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:08:17
complains about broken packages
c-c 2017-03-02 09:08:20
ok, you should have said so
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:08:21
noqnio1: did you try apt-get -f install
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:08:24
yes
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:08:46
apt-get simply refuses to do anything
c-c 2017-03-02 09:09:00
thats not an error message I've heard of so cannot help there
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:09:17
Shadow, dpkg -i didnt work either
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:09:17
noqnio1: what is it's complaints?
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:09:33
dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-themes-standard-data
dpkg 2017-03-02 09:09:34
noqnio1: That isn't an error, post the whole output to a pastebin (/msg dpkg pastebin).
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:09:47
unable to open '/usr/share/themes/Adwaita-dark/gtk-3.0/gtk.css.dpkg-new': No such file or directory
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:09:59
noqnio1: sometimes you need to cp ....old .... for things in /var/lib/dpkg/
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:11:00
what do you mean?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:11:10
noqnio1: did you fsck the filesystem after the crash?
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:11:29
not really, doesn't it happen at boot time?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:11:40
noqnio1: depends on your /etc/fstab and the fs
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:11:51
noqnio1: does apt-get update function?
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:11:51
it was a clean shutdown, I just forgot i was upgrading and switched over real fast
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:12:00
update yes, upgrade no
unborn 2017-03-02 09:12:18
noqnio1: just backup everything included log files, and then just re install. its your best bet to get your system back working again. then you can go back and investigate the log files what went wrong. I guess your gui does not work but terminal works - if so, back it up and reinstall, then restore your system and have look at log files...
c-c 2017-03-02 09:12:38
reinstall for one corrupted package? Wow
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:12:40
noqnio1: perhaps apt-get install --reinstall apt
unborn 2017-03-02 09:12:57
c-c: no, reinstall of whole system
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:13:11
nope, it refuses to do that as well
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:13:27
@unborn: yeah id rather not do that!!
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:13:27
c-c: sometimes it is the "faster" solution
unborn 2017-03-02 09:13:27
....i was not talking about packages at all.
c-c 2017-03-02 09:13:27
unborn: kind of wild when you don't even know whats wrong
unborn 2017-03-02 09:13:39
c-c, did you read what I just typed? keep the logs
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:13:43
or at least the known the work solution
unborn 2017-03-02 09:13:48
noqnio1: sure.
c-c 2017-03-02 09:14:01
unborn: sure, the leg is broken, transplant the head on a new body
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-02 09:14:04
noqnio1: Did you check/repair the filesystem
apt-get__ 2017-03-02 09:14:12
hello
unborn 2017-03-02 09:14:19
noqnio1: have look at your log files..
unborn 2017-03-02 09:14:28
they will tell you what went wrong
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:14:28
when i try to aptitude remove gnome-themes-standard it is trying to remove gnome-core and task-gnome-desktop
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:14:34
which id rather it didn't
c-c 2017-03-02 09:15:02
So, you didn't remove anythging.
c-c 2017-03-02 09:15:07
You didn't purge anything either, noqnio1
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:15:14
it did not work
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:15:19
apt-get refuses to do anything
c-c 2017-03-02 09:15:28
noqnio1: there is no "it did not work" error for me
unborn 2017-03-02 09:15:31
c-c: I have no idea what legs or heads you are on about, but logs will tell him.. logs are there to help troubleshoot.
c-c 2017-03-02 09:15:37
noqnio1: only pastebins/gists of your session
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:15:46
I pasted the message
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:15:53
10:09:33
c-c 2017-03-02 09:16:13
noqnio1: pastebin or gist
c-c 2017-03-02 09:16:21
noqnio1: or listen to people like unborn
c-c 2017-03-02 09:16:48
noqnio1: you need an analytical exact approach or forget it
Golleul 2017-03-02 09:17:39
hello,
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:17:55
http://pastebin.com/y9qgf8kz
Golleul 2017-03-02 09:17:56
Please honestly tell me which debian are you guys using. stable or testing or unstable?
c-c 2017-03-02 09:18:49
noqnio1, as root # dpkg --configure -a
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:18:56
all three.
jolt 2017-03-02 09:19:01
Stable on servers. testing/unstable on desktops
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:19:09
noqnio1: if you intend to install it... try this: dpkg --purge --force-all gnome-themes-standard && apt-get install gnome-themese-standard
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:19:26
noqnio1: the dpkg route doesn't grab all of the parents
c-c 2017-03-02 09:19:30
That looks smart too ^
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:19:32
I'm using stable on servers, testing/unstable on a laptop (two installs) and stable on a desktop I mainly use for work
c-c 2017-03-02 09:19:57
Golleul: stable usually, sometimes install stuff from testing
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:19:58
if i purge gnome-themes-standard will gnome remain?
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:20:19
Golleul: is there a reason for your curiosity? Are you trying to decide which to go with?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:20:25
yes, but it may not function without it. Not that it matters if step 2 is to put it back
c-c 2017-03-02 09:20:56
Shadow_7: use --force-depends noqnio1
unborn 2017-03-02 09:21:29
Golleul: just the one I need :)
Golleul 2017-03-02 09:21:33
hicks_, yes. Actually I am trying to install kali (which is based on debian) but it doesn't boot. so screw it. I am looking for stable distro that I can work for years without re installing. debian comes in my mind
unborn 2017-03-02 09:21:40
stable 8.7
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:21:48
Golleul: stable. Unless you have a need for newer things. I started using testing (which is current stable), due to glibc and kernel versions. But stable is good enough for my 2yo laptop now.
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:21:49
I'd say start with stable
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:21:55
move to others if you have a good reason
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:22:04
but if you don't, stable is lower maintainance
Golleul 2017-03-02 09:22:22
but I will be losing updated packages which I might need for development. such as gcc gdb etc.
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:22:23
and you can pickup the odd newer application version via backports if you have a need
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:22:23
@shadow didnt work
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:22:23
:/
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:22:32
neither c-c's suggestion
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:22:38
my desktop is on stable and I use it for dev daily, it's not really a prob
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:22:45
noqnio1: same error, or different one?
c-c 2017-03-02 09:22:48
Shadow_7: noqnio1 if apt-get purge isn't ok, try # dpkg --purge package-name --ignore-depends=package-name
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:22:54
same error when i try to install
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:23:01
was a minor issue around the c++11 rollout when a newer llvm was needed
c-c 2017-03-02 09:23:03
noqnio1: and yeah, gist or pastebin or forget
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:23:18
but that was backportable, so easy enough to work around the odd application
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:23:19
noqnio1: did you pastebin the full output?
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:23:30
yes, exactly the same as before
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:23:39
plus you can "upgrade" from stable to testing or unstable
c-c 2017-03-02 09:24:21
You can install things from testing on stable
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:24:25
and can always do the stable->testing->next stable if you really need to get some extra packages that can't be backported and dont mind running testing (via the next-stable name) for a little while
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:25:13
c-c: I thought it was better to go via backports then they've been built against the same libs as stable?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:25:17
noqnio1: do the same thing on gnome-core and arc-theme. dpkg --purge --force-all gnome-themes-standard gnome-core arc-theme; apt-get install gnome-themes-standard gnome-core arc-theme
c-c 2017-03-02 09:25:21
hicks_: sure
hicks_ 2017-03-02 09:25:21
depending on the package that is
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:25:51
noqnio1: you'll probably want to be on a non-gui console for that if you're currently using gnome
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:25:56
i removed /usr/share/themes/Adwaita-dark/gtk-3.0
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:26:07
and it worked
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:26:33
i don't know why, and frankly i don't care!!!
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:26:40
thank you both for your help
c-c 2017-03-02 09:26:59
gl!
FatalNIX 2017-03-02 09:27:48
is there a reason why using useradd to add a user and -p to set a password for that user would store the password you type plain text in the shadow file?
FatalNIX 2017-03-02 09:27:53
(obviously preventing login)
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-02 09:28:46
FatalNIX: Which release?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:28:52
noqnio1: probably want to --reinstall gnome-themes-standard-data too, which contains that part
noqnio1 2017-03-02 09:29:03
I did. thanks :)
greycat 2017-03-02 09:30:31
some of the user admin commands expect you to supply a hashed password, not a plaintext password
FatalNIX 2017-03-02 09:30:38
jhutchins_wk: 8.7.something
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:30:49
FatalNIX: adduser is the other option that might be better
FatalNIX 2017-03-02 09:30:49
arch and centos7 also seems to be affected..
greycat 2017-03-02 09:31:05
"affected" by "I didn't read the man page"
FatalNIX 2017-03-02 09:31:38
nope, followed the man page
FatalNIX 2017-03-02 09:31:48
greycat: so go skin a cat :P
greycat 2017-03-02 09:32:13
useradd(8) says "-p, --password PASSWORD The encrypted password, as returned by crypt(3)."
greycat 2017-03-02 09:32:17
Which man page are YOU reading?
FatalNIX 2017-03-02 09:32:40
not the debian one..
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 09:32:46
why not use passwd to change the password?
greycat 2017-03-02 09:33:20
Because then he wouldn't be able to bitch about how it didn't do what he naively expected!
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-02 09:33:20
FatalNIX: It's an old utility. It expects you to manually encrypt the password so that it's secure when you enter it (and it's logged in your history).
FatalNIX 2017-03-02 09:38:13
thanks though
nickelad 2017-03-02 09:45:30
do i need vtx if i want to emulate 64bit debian with vbox?
Neph 2017-03-02 10:06:13
Hi. I am running testing (kernel 4.5.0) and I either need to get rid of predictable network interface names (tried the kernel boot options to no avail already) or find a way to configure the first ethernet device statically, no matter on which hardware I boot. Ideas welcome.
somiaj 2017-03-02 10:11:50
Neph: testing hasn't used kernel 4.5 for a while, you should make sure you are running current stretch packages.
somiaj 2017-03-02 10:12:34
there are ways to default to the 'classic' naming version, how are you installing on the other machines such that the interface name isn't allow to be configured to be static?
Neph 2017-03-02 10:14:58
I'll upgrade and reboot. Will take a while, this is a USB stick that I created for automatic image-deployment. Hence the need to apply the same network config to random interfaces.
Neph 2017-03-02 10:16:31
biosdevname=0 and net.ifnames=0 in /etc/default/grub:GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
somiaj 2017-03-02 10:29:39
Neph: give some more details, you are running off of a usb and you want the usb to give an internet connection to any interface it finds on different machines (sounds like you want to use some live system) or are you copying this image to the machine and want it to automatically assign the primary interface an ip?
somiaj 2017-03-02 10:31:06
Neph: https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/PredictableNetworkInterfaceNames/ -- scroll down to 'How do I disable this?' on ways to disable the predectiable names and use either the classic method or develop your own naming method
somiaj 2017-03-02 10:31:41
hmm, net.ifnames=0 should have worked, did this nto work, again try on the current 4.9 kernel
Neph 2017-03-02 10:31:57
Have tried it, thanks, does not work. Will try again after upgrading to latest testing.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-02 10:33:06
Neph: Some of that stuff is evolving faster than it's being documented. Try to find newer docs. (kernel.org).
romanosaurius_re 2017-03-02 10:34:50
Hi. Question regarding iptables-save. Can I combine the output of two iptables-save files into a single one ?
greycat 2017-03-02 10:35:57
That may be more of a #netfilter question.
greycat 2017-03-02 10:36:14
I would assume it's not trivial to do so.
romanosaurius_re 2017-03-02 10:36:31
not easy so far...
romanosaurius_re 2017-03-02 10:36:36
will ping them!
romanosaurius_re 2017-03-02 10:36:39
thanks
