somiaj 2017-03-02 17:45:23
you don't need to configure all three, pulse is on top of alsa, and if using pulse, provide alsa sees the card you should only use pulse and it shoudln't matter if you use pavucontrol or xfce to do that
georgia 2017-03-02 17:45:59
yeah, you're right. I haven't been using alsa, when I exit the settings don't change so I guess I'm just looking at the other cards
georgia 2017-03-02 17:46:52
xfce mixer matters though because
georgia 2017-03-02 17:47:43
right now with pavu and xfce both on analog audio, pressing volume function keys shows notification on the screen, and changes the volume applet (they are reactive)
georgia 2017-03-02 17:47:53
but no sound.
somiaj 2017-03-02 17:48:06
yea I'm unsure about pulse.
somiaj 2017-03-02 17:48:24
I know that the model can affect how different ports on a sound card are treated
georgia 2017-03-02 17:48:26
pulse is weird because HDMI whatever digital is unplugged
georgia 2017-03-02 17:48:36
It's not a hardware issue :P
georgia 2017-03-02 17:49:12
Thank you so much by the way. It's amazing that you volunteer your time helping "Debian Nerds!!", as someone once said.
somiaj 2017-03-02 17:49:43
one thing you could try is disable pulse and just work with alsa
somiaj 2017-03-02 17:49:48
!alsa checklist
dpkg 2017-03-02 17:49:48
1) add yourself to the 'audio' group (log out & in again) 2) unmute and raise channels w/ alsamixer (also try muting some & toggle jack sense if available) 3) or other daemon stopped? 4) speakers on? 5) does "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav" work for root? 6) purge any installed packages to remove ALSA blacklist. somiaj 2017-03-02 17:50:18
but with snd-hda-intel it is sometimes as easy as choosing a different model for your codec
georgia 2017-03-02 17:50:35
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav doesn't work for root
somiaj 2017-03-02 17:51:16
try the different sound cards/devices listed in aplay -l
georgia 2017-03-02 17:51:40

she keeps fucking with root and making pulse run as root
georgia 2017-03-02 17:52:31
SORRY
georgia 2017-03-02 17:53:49
Sorry for flooding I mean
georgia 2017-03-02 17:53:55
Not sure what you're talking about
georgia 2017-03-02 17:54:10
running aplay whatever with root is on the alsa config checklist
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 17:55:59
computer crashed. I guess if I opt to manually run fstrim on an ssd, that I should actually do that at least once a month.
georgia 2017-03-02 17:56:32
And I'm in the audio group
georgia 2017-03-02 17:57:25
I don't think you need to do that unless it's an old SSD
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 17:57:40
or a cheap one
georgia 2017-03-02 17:57:41
It does it automatically now. SMART technology or something
georgia 2017-03-02 17:57:41
touche
georgia 2017-03-02 17:58:22
SSD is getting really cheap. When I was 16 a TB was 750. When I was 18 it was 450.
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 17:58:22
so still audio problem for you georgia? works on user, not on root?
georgia 2017-03-02 17:58:29
works on neither
georgia 2017-03-02 17:58:36
no sound. zero. at all.
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 17:58:48
georgia: do you have a .asoundrc?
georgia 2017-03-02 17:59:14
Ill try a find
somiaj 2017-03-02 17:59:43
georgia: $HOME/.asoundrc
georgia 2017-03-02 18:00:23
Do you mean ~/? aka my user's working directory
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:00:29
georgia: does speaker-test output? $ speaker-test -c 2 -l 1 -D hw:1
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:00:42
georgia: ~/.asoundrc
somiaj 2017-03-02 18:01:03
though this shouldn't affect root's test, have you tried to see if there are different models for your cards codec yet?
georgia 2017-03-02 18:01:08
holy crap, I don't have on
georgia 2017-03-02 18:01:11
*one
somiaj 2017-03-02 18:01:14
that's fine
somiaj 2017-03-02 18:01:19
you shouldn't since you use pulse
georgia 2017-03-02 18:01:22
alrighty then.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:01:35
testing the speaker now
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:01:47
there are system defaults, so .asoundrc is optional. although defaults probably favor pulseaudio
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:02:04
without the -D if using pulse
georgia 2017-03-02 18:02:21
I got an error message
georgia 2017-03-02 18:02:34
I want to paste it but it will flood. I have to reformat it...
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:02:43
the hw:# is relative to your /proc/asound/cards
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:03:05
where HDMI audio would be hw:0,3 or similar
georgia 2017-03-02 18:03:19
what the hell is pink noise?
georgia 2017-03-02 18:03:21

Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:03:52
georgia: without the -D hw:1 part... aka system defaults
somiaj 2017-03-02 18:04:48
is pulse still running?
georgia 2017-03-02 18:04:53
I'll paste this again because it answers some of your questions: http://pastebin.com/vfvVrtQH
georgia 2017-03-02 18:05:31
It goes from bottom up aka Hardware > Alsa > Pulseaudio
georgia 2017-03-02 18:05:39
It's redundant but forgive me
georgia 2017-03-02 18:05:54
pulse is running. I'll kill it though
somiaj 2017-03-02 18:06:12
that is why you are getting resource busy
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:06:30
georgia: pulse auto respawns... unless you have autospawn = no in /etc/pulse/client.conf
georgia 2017-03-02 18:07:02
well then i'll kill 9
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:07:24
georgia: the init system respawns it, even with kill. I suppose systemd now
somiaj 2017-03-02 18:07:28
that won't stop it from respawing
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:07:36
georgia: baring "autospawn = no" in the conf
georgia 2017-03-02 18:07:48
I'll turn off autospawn
georgia 2017-03-02 18:08:05
by the way, do you have gsmartcontrol?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:08:23
ofc that's only there because pulse used to be a bigger turd that always crashed
georgia 2017-03-02 18:09:03
is that just boolean?
georgia 2017-03-02 18:09:09
i'll try it out
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:09:19
it's a yes or no setting, so yes, boolean
georgia 2017-03-02 18:09:35
yeah, that's what I meant.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:09:58
well this is interesting because it has some options that might come in handy
georgia 2017-03-02 18:10:02
like default X
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:10:03
technically boolean is true or false. But same spirit I guess, for string versus bit
georgia 2017-03-02 18:10:53
0 is false and 1 is true
georgia 2017-03-02 18:11:21
you must have seen the output of foo bar before :P
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:11:35
depends on the tool really... return code wise 0 == pass ... 1 == fail
georgia 2017-03-02 18:11:56
I'm talking in terms of boolean algebra.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:12:28
and wikipedia's "AND", "OR", "NOT" are called boolean operators often
georgia 2017-03-02 18:12:30
fun with logic gates!
georgia 2017-03-02 18:12:35
fuckit I'm distracted
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:12:44
bit wise... depends on your generational gap
georgia 2017-03-02 18:13:05
autospawn now equals no
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:13:25
georgia: pulseaudio --kill
georgia 2017-03-02 18:13:31
ahead of you
georgia 2017-03-02 18:13:53
now what? pulseaudio --start?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:13:55
odd that they don't also make --stop function... kids these days... so violent
georgia 2017-03-02 18:14:04
I tried stop before kill
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:14:12
georgia: try to use the soundcard first
georgia 2017-03-02 18:14:14
In my defense
georgia 2017-03-02 18:14:28
oh, the aplay thing?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:14:43
whatever tool you've had success with in the past
georgia 2017-03-02 18:15:22
I haven't. Before I had success with it out of the box. Again, it's an xfce thing somehow. Or maybe related to a GNOME package
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:15:22
aka confidence that you're not doing it wrong
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:15:41
I use speaker-test most times
georgia 2017-03-02 18:16:05
the output makes it seem like it worked
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:16:22
georgia: but no sound?
georgia 2017-03-02 18:16:27
either it or my ears is mistaken
georgia 2017-03-02 18:16:38
and I am partial to my ears
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:16:38
georgia: check mixer settings and try other outputs -D hw:1
georgia 2017-03-02 18:16:55
hw:2 no such file or dir
georgia 2017-03-02 18:17:03
same with 3
georgia 2017-03-02 18:17:10
and zero
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:17:24
probably -D hw:0 or -D hw:1 ... or the hw#,3 for HDMI audio
georgia 2017-03-02 18:17:40
I tried both
georgia 2017-03-02 18:17:50
do I need to type it like that? hw#,3?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:18:07
georgia: hw:1,3 or hw:0,3
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:18:28
georgia: check alsamixer -c # too. $ alsamixer -c 1
georgia 2017-03-02 18:18:30
zero three "worked"
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:18:40
georgia: so your HDMI out then
georgia 2017-03-02 18:18:44
as in the directories existed
georgia 2017-03-02 18:18:56
I'm sure that was in my pastebin :P
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:18:56
do you want to use alsa or pulse?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:19:38
if alsa... .asoundrc == defaults.pcm.card 1 \ndefault.pcm.device 3
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:19:48
defaults*
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:20:04
actually card 0... might be nap time
georgia 2017-03-02 18:20:34
pulseaudio. again, it worked with gnome
georgia 2017-03-02 18:20:41
this is an xfce issue somehow
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:20:55
not everything silverspoon's you
georgia 2017-03-02 18:20:56
I'll set them to default
missmbob 2017-03-02 18:21:12
if you run pulseaudio as root users will *not* be able to make sound
georgia 2017-03-02 18:21:12
no apostrophe needed :P
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:21:12
with the .asoundrc, it'll just default
georgia 2017-03-02 18:21:25
it doesn't run as either
georgia 2017-03-02 18:21:35
oh, are you at EST?
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:21:42
not by default for root. it can make sound if you config it. networked though.
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:21:55
CST, an hour before EST
georgia 2017-03-02 18:22:18
Alright, tell me what to type in.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:22:29
http://pastebin.com/vfvVrtQH
georgia 2017-03-02 18:22:31
for good measure
georgia 2017-03-02 18:22:50
just skim it :)
georgia 2017-03-02 18:23:17
I'm EST. Who goes to bed at 11:30? :P
georgia 2017-03-02 18:23:55
Oh, are you one of those really cool usenet unix nerds?
georgia 2017-03-02 18:24:38
My best friends dad worked on X windows. I asked him if he met RMS and he said "yes. he smells like ass and he's no fun at parties"
georgia 2017-03-02 18:24:53
precious
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:24:54
georgia: the pulseaudio over jackd wiki is pretty useful, if you understand what you're doing
georgia 2017-03-02 18:25:30
jackd is crazy.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:25:39
again, it worked with gnome...
georgia 2017-03-02 18:25:45
you know what? fuck it.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:26:05
I'm going to install mate alongside xfce and hex you from there
georgia 2017-03-02 18:26:10
(hexchat)
georgia 2017-03-02 18:26:15
off we go!!!
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:26:21
the probablem with worked with ... is that eventually it doesn't work with.
dooom 2017-03-02 18:27:32
that's a good one
georgia 2017-03-02 18:27:32
252 MBs later
georgia 2017-03-02 18:27:39
don't ruin this for me. I haven't used mate since the 5th time I dd zeroed my harddrive.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:28:07
aka, like 2 weeks ago
georgia 2017-03-02 18:28:21
that was a result of the weird grub dummy problem from upgrading to stretch
georgia 2017-03-02 18:29:06
okay, so I'm going to get on mate. oh wait, I use wdm. Can I switch to mate with wdm?
georgia 2017-03-02 18:29:59
anyway, I'll hexchat you about my audio settings. I'll change pulseaudio back to autospawn to recreate original
georgia 2017-03-02 18:30:21
etc
georgia 2017-03-02 18:30:41
oh crap, that was supposed to be a control F. I wanted to know what the file I changed was
georgia 2017-03-02 18:30:57
found :P
Shadow_7 2017-03-02 18:31:27
Just install xinit, and startx with .xinitrc (when all else fails)
georgia 2017-03-02 18:32:19
yeah I could get in via debian rescue.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:32:30
brb
georgia 2017-03-02 18:35:49
almost installed.
georgia 2017-03-02 18:36:27
see you on the other side
georgia 2017-03-02 18:36:53
........
georgia 2017-03-02 18:37:42
come on. 12.7 KB/S?!!?
georgia 2017-03-02 18:44:02
hey again!
georgia 2017-03-02 18:45:09
`well this is just fucking fantastic
