jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 10:45:19
Mine's an HP, not sure all of the ways to get to that menu.
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:45:28
... but then again, I also had all other disks unplugged
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:47:38
When stretch is released... is GNOME 3.22 going to end up in jessie-backports?
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:47:47
or is Jessie doomed to 3.14 for eternity?
missmbob 2017-03-03 10:47:59
no. de's dont go in backports
greycat 2017-03-03 10:48:09
When stretch is released, people who use GNOME and other fancy-schmancy desktops are going to upgrade.
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:48:56
I'm an Ubuntu convert.
greycat 2017-03-03 10:48:58
It's reasonable and common for servers to lag behind, but desktop environment users should generally upgrade as releases occur.
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:49:14
makes sense.
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:49:24
I didn't fully think out that question :|
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:49:52
I am assuming that testing is frozen right now?
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:50:07
that testing and stretch are the same thing (at the moment)
missmbob 2017-03-03 10:50:23
yes
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 10:50:33
RFleming: Gnome is complex, LOTS of packages and programs. Backporting all of it would be an extreme exercise, and really, just wait for the next release. You want everything to work together.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 10:50:46
RFleming: Something like LXDE might be possible.
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:50:54
jhutchins_wk: I'm using stretch RC2 right now
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:51:19
it's pretty rock solid
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:51:55
is stretch releasing before or after GNOME 3.24 ... and is it going to use 3.22 or 3.24?
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 10:51:56
RFleming: Except where it isn't. The freeze is where they fix the stuff that's really big and broken and needs time to fix properly.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 10:52:09
,v gnome3
judd 2017-03-03 10:52:10
No package named 'gnome3' was found in amd64.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 10:52:13
,v gnome
judd 2017-03-03 10:52:14
Package: gnome on amd64 -- wheezy: 1:3.4+7+deb7u1; jessie: 1:3.14+3; stretch: 1:3.20+3; sid: 1:3.22+1
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:52:48
that's not quite true
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:52:53
stretch is using 3.22
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 10:52:54
That would argue that it was frozen at 20.
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:53:02
the RC2 is using 3.22
missmbob 2017-03-03 10:53:20
no it's not. there isn't even an "rc2" release. rc2 is for the installer only
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 10:53:32
RFleming: THe fact that 24 isn't in sid says it won't be 24.
jrtc27 2017-03-03 10:53:46
,v gnome-shell
judd 2017-03-03 10:53:47
Package: gnome-shell on amd64 -- wheezy: 3.4.2-7+deb7u2; jessie: 3.14.4-1~deb8u1; stretch: 3.22.3-1; sid: 3.22.3-2
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:53:55
jhutchins_wk: yeah, Gnome 3.24 releases March 22.
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:55:57
missmbob: I apologise then if I don't know what I'm talking about. I used the stretch-rc2-netinst iso file, installed GNOME and it gave me 3.22.2
mtn 2017-03-03 10:56:26
RFleming: they just showed you that gnome-shell is 3.22
missmbob 2017-03-03 10:56:35
RFleming: you're right it just has nothing to do with rc2
greycat 2017-03-03 10:56:42
Looks like the package versions in stretch are not consistent at the moment.
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:57:32
So GNOME Details shows me the version of GNOME Shell?
mtn 2017-03-03 10:57:38
RFleming: yes
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:57:57
too many version numbers to keep track of
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:57:58
yeesh
mtn 2017-03-03 10:58:08
fun!
jrtc27 2017-03-03 10:58:11
the "gnome" package itself is just a meta-package to pull in the various packages
jrtc27 2017-03-03 10:58:18
it doesn't really matter what version it is
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:59:19
I guess :)
RFleming 2017-03-03 10:59:57
I'm new to GNOME 3 as well... didn't like it way back and used XFCE... but as I've grown older (and my hardware less sucky), it suits my workflow.
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:00:09
and I seem to like those content decorations
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:01:36
you may want to check out gnome-tweak-tool as well
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:01:42
am familiar with it
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:01:48
... very :)
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:01:56
good
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:02:00
Cantrell fonts and I don't get along well
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:02:01
:)
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:02:09
Cantrall?
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:02:11
meh
coreutil 2017-03-03 11:03:04
hello, I have stretch installed..the kvm install command in debian wiki returns obsolete package error. should I install the replacements?
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:03:16
jrtc27: is there another place to set default applications for extensions?
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:04:02
for instance, I want .deb packages to open in gdebi since the Software Center won't open them
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:04:40
I have no idea, my DE is a glorified terminal multiplexor...
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:05:39
jrtc27: like tmux?
missmbob 2017-03-03 11:05:58
in xfce it's right-click on click on file then open with->open with other application
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:06:22
yeah... that's what I'm used to
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:06:55
I think I found it in GNOME... Right-click -> Properties, choose the Open With tab, select and set as default
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:07:37
a bit round-about... but not something I'll be doing a whole lot of.
missmbob 2017-03-03 11:09:11
i still think it's annoying that you cant do gdebi foo*.deb
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:09:27
reportbug gdebi then?
missmbob 2017-03-03 11:09:42
pretty sure it's intentional
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:10:05
SYNOPSIS
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:10:05
gdebi [package.deb]...
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:10:08
it should work....?
missmbob 2017-03-03 11:10:13
single package
jrtc27 2017-03-03 11:10:31
then there shouldn't be the "..." in the manpage
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:10:46
I just wish they'd fix APT to not recurse when selecting --install-suggests
RFleming 2017-03-03 11:11:05
... or at least make an option to recurse only 1 level.
stoned 2017-03-03 11:43:11
I'm going commando in my disks !
stoned 2017-03-03 11:43:21
oops wrong window.
a___ 2017-03-03 11:43:49
Back again. So one drive did boot and 'debian' was listed in BIOS. The other didn't and 'debian' wasn't listed. I reinstalled debian on the bad one. Now 'debian' appears in BIOS for that drive, but it's disappeared on the other drive (and therefore I cannot boot it). Why?
awal1 2017-03-03 11:45:14
debian listed in bios?
