pinaaq 2017-03-03 05:46:15
mtn: yeah. because i used ntfsfix.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:46:35
I use the readonly ntfs kernel driver.
mtn 2017-03-03 05:46:38
pinaaq: no, it was already corrupt. windows did that for you :(
stoned 2017-03-03 05:47:19
you need to run a windows env. and then run that utility "chkdsk.exe"
stoned 2017-03-03 05:47:30
it is a windows program, not linux program
jasonwc 2017-03-03 05:48:28
stoned Did you get ZFS back up and running after upgrading to Stretch?
stoned 2017-03-03 05:48:36
no, man
pinaaq 2017-03-03 05:48:40
stoned: No sir. Those partitions worked perfectly fine until i did a grub-install
stoned 2017-03-03 05:49:13
pinaaq: It may seem like that grub-install could have corrupted the nt file system data stuff.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:49:19
but I mean it is unlikely.
jasonwc 2017-03-03 05:49:25
stoned what happened?
stoned 2017-03-03 05:49:30
If it were gonna do smething, it would nuke your patition/mbr stuff
stoned 2017-03-03 05:49:33
not actual FS data.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:49:37
so grub didn't do this.
pinaaq 2017-03-03 05:49:38
while installing the sustem, grub was installed to /dev/sda8 which broke the system after upgrade
mtn 2017-03-03 05:49:39
more like impossible ;)
tw 2017-03-03 05:49:46
Walex: I expect that, what I mean is is there an alternatives redirector that selects the global screensaver program, regardless of DE.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:49:47
impossible yes
stoned 2017-03-03 05:49:49
like a mission
stoned 2017-03-03 05:50:01
jasonwc: well, i exported, I imported in any other OS, no dice.
pinaaq 2017-03-03 05:50:02
hence i had to reinstall the grub to /dev/sda.
tw 2017-03-03 05:50:11
Or if I change the DE, I can call this program and it will always dispatch to the active screensaver program.
pinaaq 2017-03-03 05:50:18
after that my ntfs partitions are 'ro'
mtn 2017-03-03 05:51:13
pinaaq: did you read what the bot said about fuse an ntfs3g?
jasonwc 2017-03-03 05:51:14
stoned The ZFS version must support the feature flags used on the pool. So it would have to be the same, or a newer version, unless you never upgraded your pool.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:51:29
jasonwc: nohting shows up in import list. Data wasn't important, so I tried many things, such as -f, which added the disks to the pool again, labelclear, redefine partition type gpt, restart everything in a Open Indiana VM, use solaris's zfs to create a mirror, come back to linux, import, it works. but the partition structure that zol creates is totally diffrent from the partition structure solris creates
stoned 2017-03-03 05:51:35
for zfs pools.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:52:01
Right now, I can't use zfs anyway, in mirror anyway, b/c 1 disk has massive physical errors
pinaaq 2017-03-03 05:52:02
stoned: yes. grub didn't do it. in fact data on the said partions are perfectly readable. It's just write is disable.
pinaaq 2017-03-03 05:52:13
mtn: I'm gonna try ntfs3g
stoned 2017-03-03 05:52:40
pinaaq: you need to reboot into windows, scan the disk so it's healthy file system using 'chkdsk.exe', shutdown clean, then come into debian and use ntfs-3g
stoned 2017-03-03 05:52:46
otherwise it will not work and cause even more issues
stoned 2017-03-03 05:52:55
I don't trust ntfs r/w in linux, no matter what anyone says.
jasonwc 2017-03-03 05:53:04
stoned Yeah, the ZFS pools on Linux are not importable in Solaris. It has a pool version of 5000.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:53:25
jasonwc: and now, the pools created in OI can't be listd in zfs in debian
stoned 2017-03-03 05:53:32
It's so old the bpo versions. I guess?
stoned 2017-03-03 05:54:17
so if you can't take your pools across the world, you have the zfs on linux in debian (mabye upstream, zol port itself) that's no good?
stoned 2017-03-03 05:54:20
I dunno.
jasonwc 2017-03-03 05:54:32
stoned I asked a ZFS developer. You need to create the zpool with pool version 28. Otherwise, it's not going to work.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:55:17
jasonwc: what if I create the pool in OI, latest version, I assume is 28 or higher, then I export, then I do import in linux, and nothing shows up.
radw62 2017-03-03 05:56:36
hello
stoned 2017-03-03 05:56:55
jasonwc: also, zpool created in solaris, defines no parittions in the disk, the whole disk is used for zfs. zfs in debin backport will create 3 partitions, /dev/sde, sde1, sde9 or 8 or something.
jasonwc 2017-03-03 05:56:57
stoned I'm asking him
radw62 2017-03-03 05:57:00
if I clone disks with dd and src disk is larger than dst disk
stoned 2017-03-03 05:57:06
I'm in #zfs too, where are you?
stoned 2017-03-03 05:57:16
I'm als in #openindiana they have been ehlpingme since yesterday
radw62 2017-03-03 05:57:28
but the data stored on src can fit on dst disk
radw62 2017-03-03 05:57:54
the cole operation with dd is correct, right ??
tw 2017-03-03 05:58:07
radw62: make a new filesystem, copy the files. You can't do what you are saying without corruption.
stoned 2017-03-03 05:58:22
radw62: seems like it should copy as much as it can, then not, and if that's all the data, then mabye the fs will be corrupt and you can fix it? maybe the partition wlil be corrupt and mismatch on physical size info?
stoned 2017-03-03 05:58:36
yes, corruption
jasonwc 2017-03-03 05:58:44
stoned He says you should ask in #zfsonlinux
stoned 2017-03-03 05:58:59
I see.
radw62 2017-03-03 05:59:17
ok, thanks for clarify
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 06:00:44
NTFS RW has been working fine in Linux since at lest the early 00's. The problem is there are a few exceptions where MS has done weird variations on NTFS, and there's no way to know when you have one of those until it breaks.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:01:14
jhutchins_wk: I only wanted to say I don't trust it for that reason, no that it doesn't work.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:01:39
it works, but can potentially cause problems and I don't trust things that cause problems (ntfs or 3g or whatever it maybe)
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 06:02:25
Under certain conditions, Linux can cause the "dirty file system" flag to be set on an NTFS partition just by accessing it. ntfs-utils used to include an fsck module for ntfs, that's harder to find now.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 06:03:24
stoned: If it works, it works. The problem is that if it doesn't, your first sign is a corrupted filesystem. Simple solution: always make a backup before accessing an NTFS partition for the first time.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:04:17
I just keep it read only. safe that way.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:04:19
sorry less that way.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 06:04:34
stoned: afik there's no record of an NTFS system where it works fine for a while then suddenly doesn't.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 06:06:41
ntfsfix is in ntfs-3g now, and can fix the "dirty" flag.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:08:46
well, in the days of sarge/etch it turned my ntfs drive into hpfs...
stoned 2017-03-03 06:08:56
Windows would show it has hpfs, linux as ntfs.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:09:08
used to just be ntfs, formatted via windows upon initial install.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:09:14
since then, I have not trusted ntfs r/w
stoned 2017-03-03 06:09:18
will never trust it.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:09:21
also, lost the data.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:09:27
windows won't mount hpfs.
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:09:38
i am interested in xfs for desktop - i just want to try something else other than ext4. What advantages does xfs have over ext4?
stoned 2017-03-03 06:09:49
I use xfs for / and /home
stoned 2017-03-03 06:10:07
disadvantage, fallocate wil create files wil holes in xfs. Other than that, I dunno.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:10:22
might wanna get a ups, so your fs doesn't get bad w/ power failures, if any
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:11:13
hmm stoned so no advantages then? Why did you chose xfs for / and /home ?
stoned 2017-03-03 06:11:43
well, ext4 now has extents that xfs used tob e known for
stoned 2017-03-03 06:12:00
I dunno, compare both fs features, find out in a fun read :)
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:12:13
:D
stoned 2017-03-03 06:12:33
do you know delayed allocation and whether it's beneficial?
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:13:06
I googled it but only found 2012 ish articles which i read but i didn't found a major reason why it has advantage over ext4. It was interesting that some posters aid that xfs is more robust and said that distro's kept using ext4 for convience sake
stoned 2017-03-03 06:13:28
direct i/o is nice.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:14:18
eh
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:14:28
resier4 also seems cool
stoned 2017-03-03 06:14:29
none of these goofy articles on these goofy blogs have any real inf
stoned 2017-03-03 06:14:34
just laoded w/ ads for marketning nonsense
stoned 2017-03-03 06:14:49
just compare the oficial featurees and find out what a feature is if you don't know it.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:14:56
things wil become clear.
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:15:00
so true - these blogs have a lot of fluff
stoned 2017-03-03 06:16:14
I think RHEL uses xfs by default.
stoned 2017-03-03 06:16:45
Also, stoned uses xfs by default :D
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:16:54
hehehe
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:17:26
stoned do you work for rhel or SGI inc?
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:17:38
:)
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:17:50
not that it would matter
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:17:58
just curious
stoned 2017-03-03 06:18:00
No.
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:20:16

j4ckcom 2017-03-03 06:30:17
😅
unborn 2017-03-03 06:30:37
or setup cronjob and forget it
j4ckcom 2017-03-03 06:30:52
unborn: strange. i think that i must input some statement to some file. but i can't remember it. :(
gebruiker 2017-03-03 06:31:25
j4ckcom: i thought you where joking
DoberMann 2017-03-03 06:31:30
unborn: https://wiki.debian.org/UnattendedUpgrades ;)
unborn 2017-03-03 06:31:54
j4ckcom: or just do what DoberMann suggested.. whatever is better for you ^^^^

j4ckcom 2017-03-03 06:34:19
how can i edit sources.list? unborn ?
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 06:34:32
unborn: Unattended upgrades are not recommended for anyone but experienced users.
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-03 06:34:55
j4ckcom: Why do you want to edit your sources list?
unborn 2017-03-03 06:35:10
j4ckcom: as su nano /etc/apt/sources.list
unborn 2017-03-03 06:35:10

unborn 2017-03-03 06:36:03
jhutchins: thanks for hit, I know.. he was asking for it.
unborn 2017-03-03 06:38:02
j4ckcom: ah and after you edited your source.list file you should reload it with apt-get update then you should be able to install your added things. but you should really not need to do this, just keep your system stable and working.
j4ckcom 2017-03-03 06:38:34
i don't need to update my debian? unborn ?
unborn 2017-03-03 06:39:07
j4ckcom: heh as I said, do su and then apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y
unborn 2017-03-03 06:39:14
you should be updated.
j4ckcom 2017-03-03 06:39:44
thanks unborn :)
